Thinking of getting a house alarm, question is (and dont be specific - about who or what) will it stop someone breaking in and taking car keys ?? do they usually come through the front door for example (again - dont answer if you think you will be giving something to someone - if that makes sense)

Silly question I know - im usually against them as no-one listens to them and it can bring attention to yourself. Im lucky and live in a very quiet cul de sac and dont have people just walking around....

Thoughts/evidence???

We've had an alarm (proffessionally installed) for years.Gives myself and my family some peace of mind, if someone does come in it will go off.I'd rather know something is happening in a break-in situation, hopefully it might give us more time to react or may even deter would be burglars. So far no problems, possibly just lucky, who knows?

I'll always have one now.

Have an ADT Red Care here and it has been worth its weight in gold... 2 lots caught trying to break in.. Including one that ended up in an attempted counter prosecution as our hound took a chunk out of the little fekker! Outcome - Scrote jailed, possessions in tact and hound lives!

Can you have red care and broadband these days? Last time I looked into it (some years ago) they were incompatible.

We have a Chubb system and a big hound, both very good deterrents so far

My bro installs alarms for one of the big companies. From what he has told me, they fit "contacts" to the inside of doors/windows on an open/closed loop system i.e the alarm will sound as soon as the door/window contacts aren't touching. (when a door is opened)

You can have a "dialler" fitted which will alert the alarm monitoring centre (via the phone line) as soon as your alarm is set off. They will then alert you or the police. I think you can also have the system connected directly to the police station - the police will be alerted as soon as your alarm goes off.

It's well worth investing in an alarm system.

An alarm will not stop any persistent thief, hence why I got two big dogs. One doberman and a great dane. Fantastic dogs, very obedient and now no one comes on our land at night. If they do then more fool them. I 100% recommend them fella

We had an alarm fitted on the advice of the police after we were burgled and the car stolen. To echo other posters, I doubt it would deter a determined burglar but it's one of many deterrents.

My situation is the same as yours. On the occasional occasion (?) that someone's burglar alarm goes off it's when they're on holiday and a cat or reflected bit of sunlight has set it off. So rather run to the phone and dial 999, we look out of the window, see that all is well, then wait half an hour cursing for the bloody siren to stop. And even if I did call 999, I'd be very surprised if Plod turns up before the culprit has legged it with the telly.

So other than a possible insurance discount, of limited value I think.

As said before, an alarm won't stop anybody breaking in, CCTV won't stop somebody breaking in, metal shutters won't stop somebody breaking in. If they want in they will get in simple as that.

What it will do coupled with other measures i.e. good locks, security lights etc is deter the nob 'ead looking for an easy reward. If they go looking else where then it's done it's job. The last thing an oppotunist wants is to draw any attention, the determined one couldn't give a monkeys who notices.

If an alarm is unmaintained and constantly activating for no reason, then no, nobody will take any notice. wink

As to the question about car keys - in our experience of late they have mostly gained entry by the front door, possibly due to the fact that that is the area where normally most people will leave their keys. Fortunatly so far those who already have had an alarm, and they where primarily after keys, once the alarm was activated they have disappeared. I wouldn't know what the actual crimes statics are though for this kind of break in.

There's a system called AlertMe. www.alertme.com. Works for me.

I wanted to know of any issues, knew of the 'alarms are ignored and annoying' thing and so went with this.

Very satisfied. Check it out.

Thanks for the feedback, really wanted to see if there was anyone that had lost whatever and had an alarm....

ref the dog - erm I have to pass on the dog after seeing a friend of a friends son 2 years old after being attacked by an "old very good and with no history" attacked him for no reason. Trust me it brought a tear to my eye...

Think we will start with some security lights and investigate an alarm...

Looks very interesting - although they seem to hide away the monthly fee information.

I would edge toward Redcare GSM over Dual Com, working daily with an awful lot of both I seem to spend a lot more time getting dual com's back up and running (involving time and money) than Red Care which just do their thing. You could also consider Emizon for an IP/GPRS base solution, not got to many fitted yet but so far they all seem pretty good with the only issues being when large corporations are involved and their network security but once sorted all ok.

Oh and Red Care is fully compatible with broad band it is just dial-up and faxes etc they do not like but even that can be sorted with a mcd filter fitted

Cheers for that Paul, have just started to use Dual Com having had a few issues with RedCare that we weren't happy about so thought we'd give it a go.

Sorry to go O/T a little biggrin Emizon is new to me so will have to take a look at that smile. Does it easily fit inside the panel or does it require a seperate box? One small problem we find with RedCare is that it can be a very tight fit in certain panels. A new Panel which we are waiting to still be released, DualCom has a space for it that will fit like a glove.

Still waiting for the POLL hehe

As to Car keys, I think somebody on here said about putting a fake car key in a kitchen draw, then hide away the real one's. Once found and outside the house, then they won't want to fumble around for too long with a set of keys that don't work. Seemed a good idea to me.

Hi mate

The TCD is roughly the same size as a red care no no good for small panels although you could just about get one in a 9751 if you really wanted... It is a good bit of kit though, goes on the RS485 line on the galaxy and comes on-line as a comm's module, full SIA signalling direct from the panel but the best bit is that it also connects to the RS232 and allows remote connection via
RSsuite through it without the need for an ethernet module.

As for dual comm's a bit of a PITA, they are good for the customer and sales side of things but from a service point of view we have real issues with them constantly failing on the polling server which can cause allot of issues, call outs and wasted time and effort.
