Hi

Based upon a conversation with a friend today and their glorious wood burning stove and the 'how to get heat out of an open fire' thread I've been thinking about taking out our gas fire and replacing it with a stove.

The fireplace would need a little work to reopen the breast up but from what I've read I'd need to have the flue changed from the gas one to something suitable for solid fuel. Can somebody give me a rough idea of the price to do that? Is it a simple case of pulling the old flue out and sticking a new one in or much more labour intensive?

Our new-build house came with a class 2 chimney (gas only) - it wasn't suitable for a solid fuel flue, so we put an industrial unit style flue up the side of the house. We don't care, we can't see it tongue out

My crude investigations have shown that a flue installation costs about £1000 including parts.

We have a 1930s detached place and have a gas fire installed into what must have been an open fire originally.

I really want an open fire or stove but feel if I get someone out to check to see if we need a liner they will just say yes!

Though I would rather be safe than sorry, don't want to kill everyone for the sake of a grand!
