Fitting Venetian Blinds - will it make any difference?

I've been fitting wooden venetian blinds to some windows that have been bare until now, a friend has suggested that this should make the house warmer as it will create a thermal barrier, is he talking sense or just a load of rubbish?
It would be nice if it did as they have all had to be cut to size which as you may know is not the most exciting job in the world!
