About 8pm this evening the temperature in my bedroom was 59F. There's a radiator under the window but it's not very big and half the heat goes up behind the curtains.

So I did a little test, and with two screws and a piece of string held the curtain back so the heat going behind it was minimised. Three hours later I checked the temp again, expecting it to be maybe 61 but it was still 59.

So I guess the window is letting in a fixed amount of 'cold', and the radiator is putting out a fixed amount of heat, regardless of where the curtain is!

Wierd science smile

I have a room so cold it must be haunted. I have taped the windows shut, closed the curtains, upped the radiators, all sorts of voodoo. Cold as cold can be.

It's the room with the sofabed, our Xmas guests are going to need thermals...

Is it small and white with lots of shelves in it?

Yeah, and there's a problem with the light, it doesn't work when the door's shut smile

Actually, I may offer our guests a couple of shelves in our AEG, it's probably warmer than the guest room and they can have breakfast in bed.

pull the sofabed away from the radiator.

Sounds like something Clint Eastwood would say in a film.

Unfortunately, the radiator is already 6' away. We have wooden windows & frames (with double glazing) and they are very drafty - there's no weather strip in there although there's a slot machined to accept them. Years of over-painting and I doubt if I could fit anything in there now. Anyway, it's not my thread, so enough already...

Or the outside temperature dropped by two or three degrees during your test. So the fixed amount of cold isn't fixed. Cold what anyway? You need units. May I suggest kilogrammes?

Parsecs sound more fun, or if they won't fit, Angstrom Units...

I know this isn't a sensible thread but is there a low-cost way to see where the cold is coming from = heat is going to. A poor man's thermal imager, or a decent way of measuring air/surface temperatures almost instantaneously? Can you rent a thermal imager, or modify a video camera or something.

Also, do Angstrom Units come flat-packed, and are Parsecs kitchens also from IKEA?

Shut a cat in the room. Give it time to settle and get comfy. The point furthest away from the cat will be the coldest. The cat will be at the warmest point.
