Any Sky engineers here? Drilling walls query
Discussion
We are looking to get Sky installed into our house. I had an Engineer round last week to install but he came and told me he'd need to run a the cable all the way round the back of the house, in through the front wall, up and over the door to the TV point. I wasn't happy at the prospect of this, so asked if there was an alternative.
He gave me his mates number to call, who said he could go from the back of the house, in through the back wall, to the understairs cupboard and through into the living room that way.
This would involve cutting holes in the back wall, the doorframe of the stairs cupboard and a wall from stairs cupboard into the living room.
The Sky woman on the phone wasn't that helpful in telling me if Sky can do all this or if I need to do it prior to their visit. I am sure I heard somewhere that they don't drill through internal walls?

i work for sky and there is a clear cut set of rules. what the installer has told you is kind of correct.
cabling rules are that the cable should come down from the dish to a low level and go around to the entry point at a low level where ever possible.
where the tv is in the centre of the room it is standard practice to clip over the door frame as we are not permitted to lift carpets/floor coverings. although there is nothing stopping you from doing it. lots of people like to do it this way.
as regards drilling holes. we are only issued with masonry drill bits so we are not permitted to drill through wooden/plastic door/window frames. (nothing stopping us using such holes if they are already in place)
you can drill through internal walls if you can see that it is safe to do so from both sides.
we are also issued with a wall stud/pipe detector this MUST give a green light before any hole is drilled.
some guys don’t like to drill internal walls because there is a risk that it will take a big lump of plaster off on one side. if i ever have to do it i always make the customer aware of the risk.

should'nt be a problem if the holes are already there. just to point out that we are also not aloud to let people use our equipment (eg drills) incase of injury. so have yours handy.
i no that some of these rules may seem a bit daft but its not worth risking our job for if anything were to go wrong.
the vast majority of our guys will do what ever thay can to help. none of us want to have to cancel a job.
all be it that the weather is causing us some problems at the min.

Pah! When we had the bad snow in January i only took one day off from the sky work - And that was only because the stock delivery van didn't turn up to the pickup point. I was self-employed though, So if i didnt get the jobs done i didn't get paid. Get a shovel and some grit in the van and get on with it lad!.
I used to usually just drill through internal walls if i had to and the customer was willing to take the chance. Sharp drill bit, Drilled smoothly without the hammer action will get you through most internal walls with minimal blowout - and i always had a bit of filler in the van just incase.
