I'm going to be hanging a 32" LCD on a plasterboard wall in the not too distant future.

I'm not going to mount directly to the plasterboard as I wouldn't trust it.

What I want to do is cut out a section of the plasterboard, exposing two of the upright wooden batons. To these batons I'll attach a piece of MDF the same size as the hole in the wall, and then screw the TV bracket directly to the MDF.

Anybody see a problem with this?

You shouldnt have a problem doing that, I ended up cutting my plasterboard out and mounting into the brick work behind, however you do it, its worth taking the time to get it perfect!

Sounds fine but put a fishing line in from behind the telly to where ever the dvd player etc are so you can fish extra cables in when you get another toy.

Why not attach your proposed piece of mdf to the wall on the battens without actually cutting out the plasterboard? At least you dont end up with a dirty great hole on the wall if you ever move the telly in the future.

A BIG hole in the plaster board isn't actually harder to fix than a small one, and it makes getting your fist in there to go fishing much easier.

Actually, for a 13Kg set, these here are very good fixings:

Of course, if part of the bracket is just screwed straight through into the studding it will help.

No space. It's going on the wall at the end of the bed and there's only a 2 foot gap. I'd take my knees out on the stand every time I walked past.

I thought about screwing through into the batons, but would prefer to be sure I'm getting into them securely.

Fix two metal plates across the space, rather than hacking lumps of the wall out.

I had a 35kg plasma on a plasterboard wall with no problems. Bracket was fastened partly into batons and partly into plasterboard alone. I wouldn't hack the wall about for something that weighs 13kg.

Why cut a massive hole? Why not just locate the studs and screw the MDF sheet into those with long screws and use short screws to hold the bracket to the MDF? (You can knock on the wall to find the studs!)

Or use a stud finder.

You're quite right, but knocking is free though!

However this is pretty good value at £22 for stud finder/live finder/pipe finder and level:

I mounted my 50" plasma on a flexible arm mount on a hollow plasterboard wall using these things.

They are more than capable of holding it at a distance of over two feet from the wall so would have no problem with a flat wall bracket. There are different sizes for different loads so just pic the right one.

There's no way I would risk hanging a telly off a bracket with fixings anchored behind a plasterboard sandwich.

Same here.
You don't need a stud finder to find a stud FFS, just a rapping knuckle and a working ear.

Personally I would never risk hanging a tv on the wall with plasterboard fixings, it's either a case of cutting out the sheet, and adding a couple of dwangs (or noggins for those that live in englandshire) and re sheeting over the top. However if you can find the posts, and there's no need for a joist finder, either a knuckle and ear, or on a lot of houses just look for signs of the plasterboard screws in the wall, as evidence of where the posts are, a lot of taped walls show these signs.

You could always drill the bracket for mounting holes to suit the studs?

I've mounted most things in a house using these from floating shelves to mirrors to entire kitchen units.
