...to give employment to the artisan.

Why didn't I pay some capable bloke to regrout my bathroom?

It's something I've never done before and I have now got the hang of it, but only on the last few tiles in a corner of the room that no-one will ever see.

I also need a new carpet, as I've covered it in grout.

Ok but taking the positive out of the negative; at least you can do the job yourself without having to pay someone else smile

Pictures please I could do with a good laugh

It's always worth paying someone to do a job that you're not trained in.

I've found this out the hard way.

But it's always worth picking up a new skill, surely?

That is how I learnt to plumb and plaster and fit kitchens etc etc. But grouting is punishment for me. My mum is good at it though, mind you she is a better plasterer than me too

depends if you can pick up skills or not wink

Also, will you enjoy doing it? A skill is all ok so long as you enjoy it.

Yes, Sonic. LGF is a girl, and whilst no doubt smells very pretty whilst indulging in haberdashery etc, ought not to have any kind of serious opinion on DIY, at least, not one a gentleman would ever consider.

Carpet in a bathroom is disgusting so you might as well replace it with something better while you're at it - tiles, wood, whatever.

I feel slightly dirty now.

And Swerni love, I really am sewing bunting. The window needed tarting up and the plaster has flaked away so I thought I'd hide it.

I can't believe I'm going to write about this, but I suppose it may save someone else the time that this tip saved me!

Buy some Domestos Grot Buster (it must be Grot Buster, no other type will do), it's hard to find but worth looking for.

Apply a small amount up the areas of grout that need cleaning and leave overnight or during the day, when you return, rub with a toothbrush if necessary or just rinse off. All of the black mouldy ming type stuff that grows in between the tiles and on the silicone sealant will disappear. Obviously you have to make sure to not miss any bits.

In four years of living alone I never found anything that removed this black mouldy stuff and my shower was looking more and more nasty, one treatment with this stuff and it looks like new again. Well worth the £1.99 that I paid! biggrin

There are plenty of skills you can practice in the kitchen, and plenty more you can pick up in the bedroom. Your choice.

Talking of new skills, and one for you LGF, i got a bread maker for christmas - best thing since sliced bread! Although i'm having to slice it again. Hmm.

I'll try certain things, but there is no point in making yourself miserable trying to do something that someone else can do.

I don't mind having a go at anything, titter ye not, and thought I'd give grouting a go.

Next time I'll pay some other bugger. Tomorrow it's painting, which I can do, followed by carpet laying, which I'm also ok at.

hehe

Same here. You end up costing yourself twice as much in a) domestic disharmony and b) paying that same guy you would have got in to first unfk your mistakes, THEN to do the original job.
