Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs)

This is aimed at folk in the know, namely Ferg if he's on...a god among heating engineers

Basically I need to buy TRV's for 5 new rads and wondered if theres a "can't go wrong" brand/model of valve that I should be buying?

The Drayton TR4 is considered a good buy, but at the more expensive end of TRV prices at ~£15-20 per valve.

I had to do 11 rads when we moved into our current house almost 6 years ago. I went for the £5 jobbies from Screwfix. Have had no problems whatsoever.

When I was in the trade we used to install 100's of these with no problems.

We're up to about 12 years on our wickes ones, no issuse so far.

The TRV bit can be taken off and the valves used as normal valves anyway, so they don't normally fail and leave you with a non working rad (they can stick though but a gentle tap will free them)

The VT117 is a nice valve, I'm no fan of Draytons, although they look nice(!). The ACL RT212 replaces my favourite TRV, but I've not used enough of them to see what they are like.

I stuck Danfoss Randall RAS-C2s in, they look nicer than the fake chrome on the draytons (imho), and are easily reversible with a little twisty collar. Price was about £8-£9

To be honest, at the end of the day, I don't think you'll really be able to buy a crap TRV. If anything, go by looks and price.
