I came back home today to find a builder demolishing the plastering off the walls on the lower floor of the house. Being a student I live in a rented room in this property.

What's ticked me off is that there was no letter telling us that work was about to carried out in the house, and now there is dust fking everywhere. It's gotten all over my clothes, and all over the kitchen, and all the food I had was given a lovely coating of the wretched stuff too. Had I been told about this work happening prior to this I might have had chance to move my belongings and my food somewhere else. But nope. I would have thought the builder guy might have been nice enough to move the stuff somewhere else, but nope, not that either.

I have been coughing and spluttering non-stop whenever I am in the house, and my mouth tastes of dust. Yum. Surely it isn't healthy to be ingesting this dust cloud for too long.. (I've tried not breathing, but it only works for so long..)

So here are my Q's

1) Is there anyway to minimise the effect of the dust cloud? (Yes I've opened all the windows)
2) Are landlords/estate agents supposed to forewarn you of any work to be carried out to the house?
I can't get to sleep due to all the coughing, let alone do anything else.

Thanks, a very dusty BDR529..

B&Q for a face mask. Or if you cycle in cities, get one from Halfords.

The first time we had a ceiling removed the guy doing it closed the door and put masking tape around the gaps.

Lath and plaster ceiling with 150+ years of "dust" accumulated above. He refused to do any more rooms after that.

All other rooms got the masking tape treatment around all doors - the dust still got out, but not so much.

A student worried about dust? Dear me, what's happened to students since I was one?!
