Rechargeable batteries
Discussion
Yes, they should last a bit longer between needing to be charged, that's all.
It's good for NiMh batteries to run them right down before recharging them, maybe not every time but let them go flat once every few months... but ONLY until the handset is starting to cut out, don't run them completely empty. Then give them a good continuous charge overnight so they're properly topped up.

I would not sugest you try L-ion batteries in any item that has NiMH batteries as standard. The charging system for NiMH batteries is completly different to that of L-ion and overcharging L-ion batteries is very far from good for your health!!
Yes, stick with the same chemistry and voltage. The capacity (mAh) doesn't usually make too much difference, as most chargers are current limited. But Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries need to be charged very carefully, otherwise they explode. This sounds like Beavis & Butthead

Agreed, all the cells should be the same capacity from the same manufacturer. My point was that 500mAh 700mAh etc won't make much difference, and the worst that can happen is that you kill one or more batteries. As opposed to throwing in some Li-Ion/Li-Po cells and using a 12V battery charger on them, where you might kill yourself/grandma/the cat etc.
nimh dont have to be run all the way down, its nicads which you used to have to do that to prevent the "memory" effect.
You cant buy nicads now anyway - (afaik)
Sticking a mah size thats up to 100% larger than original doesnt normally present any problems, however they will take longer to charge , but when they are fully charged they will last longer as they have a bigger capacity.
I once manager to pierce a lipo with a pin trying to get some ballast weight into a pico-z minature helicopter, smoke, and a lot of heat ensued- so much so that i launcehd it out of the front door onto the porch to burn itself out, theres a lot of energy even in the smallest lipos!
