help heating engineer advice! Pottern Profiler 80e boiler
Discussion
Hi
I've got a mega flow system with a potterton profile 80e boiler. i also have 3 motorised valves (hot water, down stairs heating via thermostat, and upstairs heatin via thermostat.
came to find no heating and hot water only whats was already hot in the cylinder. The 3 AMP fuse to boiler has blown. i replaced the fuse with another and straight away blew. my corgi guy says the 1 amp fuse int he PCB is ok, the pcb is live.
this is what we have done so far.
turned the room thermostats down to less that 10c
turned off the hotwater and heating from the 7 day timer.
when we put a new 3 amp fuse everything is ok.. but the grundfos 15-60 pump does not start turning, the boiler doesn't do anything. the fun doesn't even startup
as soon as i turn the hot water on at the control it blows the 3 amp fuse. the same happens if i turn on the heating.
we know the pump is ok, it turns fine from the boiler when we set the boiler from pump to gravity. the pumps starts turning.
any ideas? my plumber is back in the morning.. but now i am sitting in a very cold house!

So when there no call the fuse doesn't pop?
Once you call for it it pops?
I reckon the boilers knackered.
The pump won't run or boiler fire until one of the valves opens as There's contacts in the valve that close when the valve is driven open by a stat.
I'd disconnect the boiler at the pcb and turn up the stats. If the valve opens the pump should start.
If that works fine for all 3 stats, you'll know its internal to the boiler.
If so unplug the flue fan and see if it blows the fuse then. If it still does it the pcb will be knackered.

yep when the valves open and make the call back to the boiler it blows the plug 3amp fuse.
we removed the call back to the boiler from down stairs motorised valve. the valve open fully. as soon as you remake the loop back to the boiler it blows the fuse. pump works fine on gravity setting. not on pump setting. PCB is live (tested with v.meter) at all terminals. 1amp fuse is ok. I get the impression it is a PCB problem. i will try to reset the boiler in the morning .
cheers
quick update to the thread.
The gas valve is playing up, very intermitten. The white rogers valve is known to be a weak point in the boiler.
plumber disconnected the gas valve, turned heating on and all the valves open, pump fired up, fan working perfectly. we was expecting it to blow the fuse again. reconnected the gas valve and it starts working again.
There is a gas valve kit that potterton released a few years ago that replaces the white rogers valve with a honeywell valve. kit is 140+vat.
just going to pick up the kit now. just glad to have a warm house again!
