Hi,need some advice.
If you have a stair case that comes out in a downstairs hallway what are the regulations for the gap between the stairs and the wall of the hallway that you would have to walk past.
Its hard to describe it but it is a hallway that you walk along and you can go up the stairs or walk past the stairs and go further along the hallway. Its the gap here between staircase and the wall of the hallway.
Any links or the regulations copy and pasted would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Can't remember the exact reg. but say a minimum of 700mm would suffice

Link to Building Regulations Approved Documents here

It's Approved Document K you're after.

And the answer to your question is that the depth of the landing should be at least as great as the clear width of the stair, but you're allowed to swing a door across a bottom landing so long as the swing of the door is at least 400mm clear of the bottom riser.

the 400mm rule i thought was regarding cupboard doors or doors opening on to the landing area
not restricted hallways , you must have a landing area at he top or bottom it will have to be as wide as the stairs but cant find anything on deepth, i cant find a reg on passage way sizes but cant see you getting away with any thing less than 600mm.

At least as wide as the narrowest width of the staircase.
But there is no min width stated for staircase width.
As has been said the 400mm is for the arch of a door swing.

Approved Doc. K Para. 1.16 said:
A door may swing across a landing at the bottom of a flight but only if it will leave a clear space of at least 400mm across the full width of the flight. Doors to cupboards and ducts may open in a similar manner over a landing at the top of a flight

Then you're not looking hard enough. wink

Approved Doc. K Para. 1.15 said:
Landings should be provided at the top and bottom of every flight. The width and length of every landing should be at least as great as the smallest width of the flight. The landing may include part of the floor of the building.
