I've had a new front door fitted to my house. The old door had a flush-mounted contact in the door like this:

And I need to replace it with a surface mounted one like this:

The flush-mounted contact has 3 wires going into it.

Any idea how I wire up the new one?

Have you got a meter? I would think that there is an open set and a closed set of contacts, you should be able to find which does which and replicate it on the new contact.

The 2 silver terminals on the flush contact are the alarm pair and should be connected to the terminals with the silver wires on the surface contact.

terminal 2 & 4 from the top in the picture

there should be 2 wires twisted together, the tamper circuit. Keep twisted and put around any remaining terminal on the surface contact.

I assume you have only a 4 core cable... if you have any more and where not connected leave disconnected.

I think you mean terminals 2 and 5, assuming the top terminal is terminal 1..

I think the OP is referring to the surface contact... In which case it IS 2 and 4

Thanks all, will give it a go.

I phoned a local alarm place to see if they would come and do it. They wanted £100 call out charge, plus £50 an hour with a minimum of an hour charged...!

That is almost daylight robbery!

It really is a pretty straightforward DIY job tbh.

In simple terms, the diagram below shows how a flush contact would normally be wired. The diagram assumes that red and black are the alarm circuit, yellow and blue are the 24hr (tamper) circuit. you should be able to see what cable colours have been used from the existing sensor.

Where are you located? If local enough, I'll come and do it for you - will cost you a pint!

ETA: Have just seen London.... unfortunately I am in the East Mids. But do spend time in London regularly - drop me a PM if you can wait a few weeks until I am next down.
