In a conversation with a colleague last week, he expressed a bit of surprise that I had moved house so many times - he lived in the same street that he grew up in, a few doors from his parents, with no intention (or so I understand it) to move. The conversation went on and a few more people got involved, and most had (apart from university) lived in 2 or 3 places in their life.

How many is average though?

If you discount university / short term accomodation / periods of sofa surfing, how many homes have you had?

I have had 12 proper homes, at the age of nearly 42 that gives me an average of 3.5 years per home. I'm not planning on moving again, though, until the kids have left home and I have retired, so hopefully that average will go up a bit!

2 houses with my parents when I was a kid.

1st flat, half a mile from my folks in same town.
Rented 3 bed 500 miles from town I grew up in.
Bought 3 bed same location
Rented 2 bed 150 miles from town I grew up in
Bought 3 bed same location
Bought 4 bed back in town I grew up in

All in the space of 18 years since I bought my flat.

Discounting university I've had 4 so in 29 years that's 7.25 years per home, if you include uni then its 10.

About 10 so far - and that was as a kid. Only been in two houses so far that I've paid for myself, and I can imagine it being 15+ before I settle down. I love moving around though.

5 houses with my folks.
Left home at 18 and had 2 rented flats, then bought 1 flat then two houses.

So 10 at 33.

I can't imagine staying somewhere for all of my life. The list above doesn't even include my time training or working abroad.

18. Split up with the second wife and moved into the spare room of a mate in Newport

26. The posh apartment is crippling me, financially, this flat becomes vacant again, I move back in and have been here ever since.

Definitely some Gypsy blood in me.

Interesting to see that a few posters have moved around with parents - that was how the conversation came up. I was talking about never really having had a home growing up, or rather, didn't have a place that I would consider as my home town, as I had lived in the north west, London and Glasgow before I was 14 years old.

It's this that has made me want to stay in one place until the children have left home, I went to 3 different primary schools and 2 secondary schools so I don't have any "old school friends", and I would rather my children to stay in the same schools and with their friends.

Only 1 house with my parents until 18, then a uni house, then moved in with my future wife and went through 4 different rental properties over 5 years, followed by 2 house purchases. Don't think we will move from the latest purchase for some time as we really like the area.

So that is 8 all told, or 9 if you count the motorhome we lived in for 6 months in the States...
