Views on spotlight in bedrooms
Discussion
I'm doing a complete rewire along with a refurbishment on a family house. I'm going to live here myself for a few years but am keeping an eye on making it appeal more to a family audience than a 32 year old guy!
I'm going to put 3 wall lights into the main bedroom and was planning to put spotlights with dimmers into it and all other bedrooms.
Are spotlights a bit overkill and too bright for bedrooms in a family house?

Yes they are! I had spotlights in my bedroom many years ago and they had to be pointed at ceilings and walls to diffuse the light so that you'd not be dazzled! My mother also had spots over her mirror and dressing table area, same deal had to point them up so as not to dazzle, they also created headache inducing double shadows on everything!
Best bet would be to ask E36guy on here, he is a lighting specialist (mostly LED it seems but I don't know!) and should be able to advise you on what you'll need.

Spotlights in my bedroom here.
I am not a major fan of spots situated normally though, i.e in the middle of the room beaming down, i have them round the edges of the room and then use them as downlighters to effectivly light the walls up.
I have 8 in my bedroom (approx 3.5mx3.5m or so) , they are dimmable led so they can be dimmed for 'sex' lighting

Cheers folks. Pendants with nice fittings it is :-)
I think my issue with spots (and not to bring up the LED/non-LED debate again) but when we ran an electricity usage monitor for a while the costs of running spots in our kitchen really changed my views on spots!I think spots give you too harsh a light in the bedroom and personally I much prefer pendants and lamps. Other view on this is that my missus hates spots anywhere other than kitchens and bathrooms.

Bedrooms are for moody lighting not floodlights!
I remember a chap who referred to his bedroom as the "games room". He had different coloured spotlights, individually switched, over the bed.His hobby was bodybuilding and he said different colours could be used to emphasise his physique, depending on the "game" he was playing.
I think spotlights have their place. I use mine for sure getting up and dressed in the morning when I want loads of light - similarly for cleaning otherwise you will miss loads but definitely make sure they're dimmable! But don't put them over your bed, go around. Have a couple of nice bedside lights or accent lights for when the spots are not required
