underlay! underlay! [arriba! arriba!]

well, more carpets and underlay but there isn't a looney tunes reference for that.
my entire house needs carpeting save for the living/dining room [wood floors] and kitchen [tiled]. i am selling on completion so looking for the cheapest method of carpeting it whilst maintaining an above average level of quality.
i'm thinking a hard wearing carpet for the corridors & stairs. i would go for a sisal/similar but worried that most people may not like this on bare feet. what are the alternatives?
it'll be plain colours for the bedrooms. will it be cheaper to:
a] go down to whichever carpet outlet has the biggest sale on and have them supply & fit carpets/underlay.
b] buy everything online and pay a local fitter? any recommendations for an online supplier, even if just underlay?
i don't mind putting all the grips and underlay down myself. i could even carpet the square room but as i can't be arsed doing the stairs i may as well pay for the lot fitting.

I'm in the process of doing this myself (although with high quality stuff as it's the house I live in)
I followed a recommendation on a previous topic on here and bought underlay, rods and door trims from Carpets Direct (www.tradepriced.co.uk) they were about half the price of my local carpet shop.
I then bought the carpet locally and had the shop's recommended fitter around to fit it.

some of my floors are a little uneven [1860's build, slight wave on the floorboards in the main bedroom]. will PU be ok or will the rubbber waffle soak out the bumps better?
oh, and is it ok to use underlay wit ha vinyl flooring over the top [bathroom]?

Hmmm probably a bit of cheeky advertising! Another reccomendation for tradepriced.co.uk here, used them a couple of times and are very good value!Go to your local small carpet place.
I'd go for a slightly better underlay (say Cloud9) and a cheaper but robust/hard wearing carpet.
My local place (that my mate runs) occasionally buys in end of roll/old stock from the manufactuers in odd sizes that he gets rid of at reasonable rates.

A friend has a Seagrass carpet, it has a fantastic smell, although I think it may be a bit love/hate it.shirt said:

carpet 'A' is going to be all the same type and wants to have a nice feel to it for the bedrooms. the rooms sizes in metres are as follows:
2.5 x 4.2
2.2 x 3.0
4.0 x 4.3
4.4 x 4.8
plus a vinyl offcut for the bathroom
carpet 'B' is for the stairs & hallways:
8.0 x 1.5 [this is a dogleg hallway but those are that will cut to fit]
2.5 x 2.3
rest at 0.8m wide for stairs and half landings.
not sure whether to have carpets A&B as the same as a sandy/fawn colour would suit all rooms or whether to have the halls/stairs in a more hardwearing material. i'll never live here so i'm thinking about whata buyer would prefer.
questions are:
a] what would you do scheme-wise
b] are there standard widths for carpet? if so, what are they?
c] what is a good estimate for me to buy everything, fit grip & underlay then have the carpet installed professionally? a grand is my finger in the air guess, any less would be a bonus.
if we have any fitters here in the east riding, gimme a shout.

Thanks for the heads up with these guys. We've just ordered from them and been able to go for the really good stuff and still make a huge saving compared to a certain well known carpet company and their average quality underlayI then bought the carpet locally and had the shop's recommended fitter around to fit it.

As long as you are not fussy about seeing what the carpet feels like, you are right to avoid the big chain shop that are always advertising huge discounts of the MRP, (these prices are totally false) but you would be suprised at what the small local shop can offer(i know Went there on recommendation. Very helpful and took me literaly 3minutes to get it all ordered and sorted for fitting on Friday.
