Electric garage doors - educate me!

I'd like to get some electric garage doors, and if possible I'd like some lighting to come on within/around the garage when the door opens too.

There seems to be a number of different mechanisms, various materials, and lots of brand choice. So what do I need to know here? What are the pros and cons of different types? Particular things I should look out for, etc etc? Basically I'm after the ever knowledgable PH to bring me up to speed on these things.

Info on my garage:
- I haven't measured yet, but it looks a pretty regular single size door at the moment (currently an up-and-over)
- It's currently a dark brown wood colour, matching the house doors and windows, and I'd prefer to keep that look if possible
- I've got a fused electrical spur point ready to go

Looks like I'll be going for a rolling shutter or sectional style. The up and overs just don't do it for me.

However, I'm still none the wiser in what your extra money is getting you between the various options/brands.

Any experiences with either style?

I'd go for a roller shutter door and for lights use something like a 150W halogen floodlight with a PIR for motion detection and maybe a photocell if you don't want it to come on when it is already light.

I had a Seceuroglide roller shutter door fitted last year, and it was a neat and tidy install, and a nice bit of kit.

We had one of these (or at least I think thats the make we had) installed last year by a local guy. The control box which sits inside the garage has a light on it which comes on when the door is opened or closed and remains on for about 5 minutes. |You might want to ensure your shutter is boxed in, not all are.

The advantage of a roller shutter in my view was that it leaves more space in the garage.

We're in the process of getting a Hormann double width sectional door from the Garage Door centre mentioned above

A sectional door or roller shutter also allows you to park right up to the outside of the door and still open it, which can be a great benefit. You also get a bit more width as the door fits the aperture from the rear side, so there's no track or arms inside the opening.

We're getting a dark brown composite wood effect one, which is around 40mm or so thick (insulated inside), controlled with a remote and there's a light on the motor box on the garage ceiling.

We have had a Hormann door for 4 years and they are excellent ours is a larger than normal size single door .

Hi David

Similarly looking to do same up here in Scotland - have had quotes for Horman, up-and-over and sectional - wondered if you could give me some advice (pity can't get you up here for this job!). Want to run the options I've been given and pricing by you and see if it all stacks up - had three quotes and very similar price wise so hoping to go ahead and would appreciate some impartial expertise thoughts !

Thanks for the info, and a real shame you don't extend this far. The Hormann brand has come up many times in my searches and they certainly seem very good, tbh I think this is the one I'd like to go for. In terms of suppliers/fitters I'm a bit clueless, just googling around and phoning a few companies from the local paper. I've got one company coming round to quote next weekend, but from what they said I believe they only offer the one product, a roller (possibly their own brand). They mentioned they bring a van round with it installed on the van so you can see it in action. Would you mind if I turned the question round? Who do you know in Essex area who you would recommend? By all means please PM if more appropriate.

I had an electric roller garage door fitted (light oak) which has a light come on in the garage, he did offer to put one outside too, but I declined as I already had a motion detecting on.

I paid £1300 all in IIRC (single)

I think they can be quite flexible with lighting options etc
