bear with me here, this is more trying to make sense of the fors and against.
If anyone wishes to comment please do.
Bit of a background.
Family, (wife and two kids) live in southampton.
I commute daily to london and back = 4 hours, cost 5k a year.
wife is a teacher. (part time)
kids 5 and 2.
youngest has cerebral palsy so requires more 'looking after' than perhaps other kids her age.

So I cannot help out as much at home as I would like, effectively my wife is a single parent during the week, (me out of the door at 6am, home at 7pm)

So we think moving closeer up the railway line. Farnborough seems a decent enough compromise. Ignoring the pros and cons of farnborough itself, we think this is a good idea.

Nearer my wifes family. Nearer work, i estimate I can save up to two hours a day. Cheaper commute, save approx £2k net a year.

More importantly, i will be at home quicker to be with the family, and not feel I am missing out and leaving my wife to it all.

There is no equivalent employement in southampton, so I have to be nearer to london.

We had our house on the market for a few months at the start of 2010. We took it off (perhaps prematurely) due to lack of houses coming onto the market where we wanted to go and the constant battle of keeping our house presentable (not easy with two kids). Plus looking at houses on rightmove was very different to looking at them in person.
We are mid thirties.
I suppose I am looking for advice, reading the above what are peoples thoughts, what would you do.
THANKS

Sounds like you have made your mind up already. smile

Work/life balance is a personal thing that only you can answer but I couldn't go back to that sort of commute once I had tasted the other side.

If you have already decided then your options are:

1: wait till your house sells and then move to Farnborough.

2: rent yours out and buy another property in Farnborough.

3: rent yours out and rent in Farnborough. ( Allows you to see if you like it)

The Market is crap at the moment so without knowing your personal circumstances I would choose number 2 for now and wait till the Market improves.

You only have one life and your children are only young once so go for it! thumbup

I would say no 3 of the above as it gives you chance to taste what farnborough like!
Unless of course you can afford to rent yours out and buy another house!
Having lived in/around/near farnborough area most of my life it's a perfectly good place, obviously areas to avoid but that's all for another thread!!

thanks both, yes it does sound like we have made our minds up again.
I think the favourite at the moment is selling ours, renting up there until something comes up that we like on not relying on the chain to cock it all up.

Have you thought about the area around Hook? Not quite so built up as Farnborough, and only a little further out by train.

By moving you reduce your commute, but how much will it increase the commute for your wife ?

I'm just about to start house hunting and found this interesting. What sort of things did you find which made you say that?
