Can you tile over tiles?
Discussion
Property I'm in the process of buying has a recently refitted bathroom but the current owners are a couple of 80 year old sisters and have fitted it out accordingly. I didn't know you could still buy Peach Suites!!
Anyway ripping out the Shower, bath etc is easy enough but to strip all the tiles seems a bit of a pain. It's floor to ceiling on all 4 walls.
Tiling straight over a bodge or acceptable?
any input appreciated

Yes, it can.
But make sure you use decent quality adhesive, and check what the substrate is- plasterboard has a particular loading figure, so tiling over tile may be too heavy, and you really dont want the wall being puled down.
You also need to make sure that the tiles are de greased before re tiling to ensure you get a decent bond.

Tile on tile may be a better option than tiling over the disaster zone that remains after getting the old ones off!. Unless you plan to have it replastered...
This is what I've been thinking. I've never removed tiles before without causing all sorts of damage to sort out.Edited by Hoonabator on Friday 4th March 13:05
I did that when I 'facelifted' my kitchen years ago. The only thing I found is that any irregularities in the first layer tend to be magnified by the second layer - so I had to go over the old tiles with a small cold chisel bashing some corners off.
Still much easier than ripping them off though.
