My mum and dad got burgled last night frown

Want to get them a burglar alarm sorted now (have been telling them to do so for many years but going to force it on them now).

Will get a local installer but just wanted to know if wireless are any good or should they def go wired as I know it will be lots of drilling?

They should do something now. A popular target is a previously burgled place, timed to get there when the old stuff has been replaced with new, and before extra precautions are put in place. It's easier to get a new tv etc than to install alarms, lights and locks.

How did they get in? Fix that first.

The reasons they got in are being sorted as we speak.

My question was on alarm types!

As was said on here a few weeks ago.

Proper companies are so good you wont even see the wires / holes.

Just had an industrial unit alarmed and can't even work our how they have run most of the wires and that for an industrial unit so guess more care would be taken with residential!

Always had wired so can't comment on wireless, might be ok now?

I'd prefer wired due to reliability and I'll probable go that way but interested to understand peoples experience of wireless .

My sister had a wireless system fitted after she was burgled, it is a comprehensive system, it uses car style keyfobs rather than an input code to arm/disarm, maybe better for older people? It also sends out text messages to mobiles if the alarm goes off. Batteries, in the PIRs, contacts and other devices, will last a couple of years they were told.

Cost was about £600 installed, that includes two years 'servicing' ie changing the batteries. Took them half a day to install. Don't think this includes an off site monitoring service where an extra monthly fee applies.

I reckon you could buy a good wireless system for £200ish and install yourself quite easily.

All depends on what quality of wireless system is used and that the detectors are located correctly i.e. Signal strengths are within tolerance and away from power sources etc etc etc.

You can get fully wireless systems and hybrid systems that use both wired and wireless technologies for those inaccessible areas. These days wireless isn't really a problem if good quality equipment is installed and used correctly. Only real down size is that batteries for wireless detectors will be inevitablely be required at some point.

Although very rare on a good quality system, any attempt at RF jamming can be detected and the user informed. Have never experienced a problem where a system has been so affected to stop it from working and doing its job.

If you want it to be insurance approved then you will need it to be installed by a NSI or SSAIB approved company. smile

Westy, I could do with having a chat with you about wireless battery-less kit.

I'm looking at just such a system now.

Security matters Aylesbury, Rich ( the boss ) is a PH'er and has owned tvrs, Ferraris etc. If you phone up and get Ian thats fine too, just say someone from Haydon Hill who's a PH'er put you in contact.

They have done all my alarm work and install it in a completely concealed manner. They are Brilliant!

Yes, the sounders and certain other devices are wired, but motion sensors & door/window contacts are wireless & battery-less.
