For serious strimming, buy a Stihl FS130 and string it up with 2.4mm Oregon Nylium line.

Another vote for Stihl here. An FS80 with Stihl 3lb/2.7mm line. Indestructible, although care has to be taken as it will ring small trees and takes chunks out of the edges of fence posts!

I feel your pain, or rather my last strimmer did after I smashed it around the trunk of a tree because I had spent more time turningi t upside down and pulling the cable through than I had actually strimming. It lasted about 15 mins. But it was only a cheapie thing. Get what you pay for I guess! smile

I like Stihl too but my vote goes for Husqvarna. Our big strimmer is in its fourth year of professional use and with no problems, great harness, lots of power and easy to use

You too, eh? Despite carefully disguising the damage and claiming I was nowhere near at the time, the bloody thing still died and I still got the requisite bking from Mrs Gaspode...

its only a small garden, dont want to spend more than £45
its just the grass gos upto concrete edging and a manhole cover,

but i spend more time with it upside down than strimming

drives me mad.

Unfortunately for £45 I suspect that's what you get. I can see why you don't want to spend the money but all the makes mentioned are good, we also have a Kawasaki which has given sterling service. As a general rule of thumb with strimmers look for one with a straight shaft rather than a curved one as these have a cheaper flexible drive going straight into the strimming head rather than a stronger shaft drive / simple gearbox. Possibly consider a better quality second hand unit?
