My up-and-over garage door is buggered. There's a cable connecting the sprung pole thing at the top of the frame to the joints at the midpoint on each side of the door. One side has come off its spool and now the whole door is stuck and at a jaunty angle. Any thoughts?

Doorman normally found in the south coast section is a man who could help you out.

If it's a Cardale door then they are easy to fix if you have some allen keys and spanners. If you call Cardale then they are very helpful and give good instructions. Or look at the instructions on their website

Thanks, there's some useful stuff on the Cardale site. My fear is the bloody great big spring involved...

Take great care. The spring is under tremendous tension, and if the cable snaps, it will slice through your skin.

Its not too difficult to do, once you've released the spring, which you do from inside with the door down, you then get all the wires in place, you then need to re-tension the spring by winding it up with two open ended spanners. 22 turns rings a bell. The difficult bit is tightening the Allen screw whilst holding the spring inlace with a spanner, this is when it can all spring back and you have to start again!

This happened to me a while back and found it impossible to fix due to access and the tensions involved. I found some chap in the local rag who fixed it quickly for about £25.

I've sort of fixed it. Needed a mate to help as I couldn't get the door to shut from inside. But it's still really jerky. Think I might have to get a man in.
