...and before anyone says it, I am putting things in the fridge bit!

I'ev got a Hoover Fridge / Freezer that is about 4 years old. The coolness is set on the "lowest" setting, i.e 1, and it is supposed to be frost free.

Even on this lowest setting, it freezing everything. Its really starting to annoy me now. I didnt even know you could freeze a jar of pickles. They were just sat there, helpless. It broke my heart.

There is a build up of ice at the back of the fridge.

The freezer FWIW works fine. Any ideas if its fixable, or is it new fridge/freezer time?

Can't remember the exact details of why it happens but mine did the same, fridge is facked and its nearly as cheap to buy a new one as to repair.

My Hoover fridge/freezer does this too - on particular shelves at particular heights. Very weird.

It sounds as though it is fecked. Before you order a new one check that your items are not touching the back of the fridge as mine used to freeze these items solid. I almost broke a spoon attacking a jelly! laugh

Does it also freeze things if you put it on its highest setting?

My thoughts exactly.

Are you getting lowest/highest and cold/colder mixed up? Its not always clear.

My neighbour just had this.
The stop on the dial was broken and although it was set on 1 it had gone past the higest setting and on to 1.
Sorted by turning back until it clicked off and then reset.
Worth a try, but sounds like a fecked thermostat.

No I dont think so, the dial runs:

0 1 2 3 4 Super

So its pretty clear.

The dial stops where it should unfortunately.

Looks like its new fridge time then!

Can you hear the thermostat clicking when you turn the dial? A new stat is not too expensive.

I had this with my Hotpoint fridge. Eventually it packed up completley and the freezer stopped freezing. Not sure about the design of the Hoover fridge but on mine there was only one set of evaporater coils in the frrezer department. A fan moved air round both compartments providng the cooling in the fridge. On mine the fan stopped working reducing the air flow.

I didn't fix it in the end as it looked like the PCB needed replacing an that was £100, so can't tell for certain what the problem was.

I belive it can also be caused by the air channels becoming blocked with dirt or ice. I think you have to disconnect the unit and leave it for 48 hours to completely defrost the channels. Might be worth a try if you can do without it for a couple of days

Try this. The problem is likely to be the drain that operates the frost free system has itself frozen. Defrost the machine fully and you amy find it works again. Once the unit is totally defrosted use a bit of wire to clear the drainage tube at the back of the fridge.

Yep, that can clag up pretty quickly - I used a bit of curtain wire on my old FF.

Is the freezer door closing properly? If it badly needs defrosting, could be that it isn't - so the fridge will be running its compressor all the time to keep it frozen. Have a look at the squashy seal round the door and check there's not a gap.

Thanks all, we're going to eat a bit of food, then I'll defrost it and see if that helps!

Before you splash out on new one, try a local repairer for a quote. New thermostat can't be that pricey surely (yea I know "don't call me Shirley").

Google came up with loads of "fridge repairer Milton Keynes"
