Does anyone know of some software that will let me map out my house (i.e all the walls) from a 2D view above?

I want to map out my current house and then I want to map out a new layout with different wall locations.

Going a step further it would be good if you could do a 3d 'walk through' but that is not essential.

Google sketchup is ideal for this.

This is very true. It's the program of choice for this sort of thing.

Search 'Sketchup tutorial' on youtube and you will see why.

I find drawing things on paper with a ruler and pencil much easier than fannying about with software.

I find taking the small amount of effort to learn Sketchup much better than fannying about with paper, ruler and pencil. And you will need an eraser as well.

We create a lot of scaled drawings of stages and sets, and use AutoCad.... but on occasions I have gone back to basics and drawn the initial proposals out on graph paper..... hugely satisying in a prehistoric way!

You really can't bear anyone to think differently from you, can you?

Don't be ridiculous.

I simply said how I felt about it, after you said how you felt about it.

Something like this, as a jpg? Took longer to post it than it did to draw it (in Sketchup)

Sketchup requires a little bit of time to learn, but I found you could create a full room with FloorPlanner in around 5 mins.

Then that would seem to be the one to go for. I use Sketchup a lot because it's ideal for kitchen cabinets and layouts, but specialised floor plan software has got to be quicker for a new user.

I used floor planner initally but I found out a bit clunky.

My rooms have lots of right angles and stuff which makes it a bit of a PITA.

I will give sketchup a bash.

I also got a PM from a PH member offering to help. Thanks a lot and I will get back to you this afternoon when I have inevitably screwed it up!

Incorrect; you suggested one way and I suggested another way (and posted a link to what the OP asked for). That was sufficient - the OP can make his choice - but you had a sarcastic poke instead, and you know it perfectly well.

Forgotten about the "fannying about" jibe that you made? Very convenient, otherwise you might fall off your high horse. smile
