Anyone got an idiots guide to doing it?

I'm trying to get my driveway level before the mot arrives, I've set out a string line but I'm struggleing with using the spirt level to see if it is indeed level. The string just seems to move everytime i place the level near it.

Cheers,

An Idiot.

Do you want it truly level or do you want it to fall a bit for drainage?

Its going to be gravel so drainage is not so much of an issue, in fact it being totally level is prob not that important, but i'm trying to work out where i want the gravel to sit so i can use the appropriate depth of mot,

you could use strips of wood stuck in the ground and a cheap laser level. then use spray paint on the wood to mark your level.

We use wooden battens (1" x 1/2") and make a frame when we're setting up lawns. Works a treat and dead easy to level as you can just run another batten across it.

As posted would be a lot easier and more accurate with a laser/dumpy level. Easiest way without is get a decent long and sturdy straight edge and cut some pegs from any timber you have (something like 2x1 or 2x2).

Transfer the level you want from your reference point using the straight edge and your level and knock a peg in until it is level, transfer the level to as many points as you feel necessary knocking a peg in at each point. Leave the pegs in while you tip/level your MOT and these will give you plenty of points to check your levels as you go. Pull pegs out when finished.
