Hi everyone, i will start by saying that i know in life you get what you pay for, but i am 22 years old and have just had an offer accepted on my first house so unfortunately will not be able to afford all the best stuff for a while smile

I am wondering where would be a good place to buy starter furniture that won't look totally cack but won't break the bank either. I don't mind assembling flat packs so is Ikea the way to go?

What recommendations would people be able to give (and who to avoid)?

In my day it was Habitat; in this day it's Ikea, yes. Not the most robust but stylish and affordable.

Or if you work in a corporation you can get your elder workmates to give you their old crap from their garages (worked for me). Guaranteed not to match or be remotely close to what you wanted, but free!

I bought my sofa from Furniture Choice and I'm happy with it.

Other bits and bobs from Ikea as already mentioned.

Also bought this mattress from Mattress Next Day. Not bargain basement but amazing comfort for the price.

Thanks for the quick replies smile

I think i will have to start looking around and see whats out there / what i fancy. 'Furniture Choice' look like a good shout awell and seem a bit better than DFS

Will still be a couple of months no doubt until i get to move in but its nice to start looking hehe

Lewis, have a look in the local paper, gumtree and other places on line.
You should be able to pick up some high quality items with plenty of life left in them for peanuts.

Keep an eye out on ebay too, some furniture shops shift their leftover stock on there and you might find a bargain, although obviously there is a lot to trawl through.

Freecycle/freegle if you don't fancy paying for it; works for me(I've donated and received perfectly serviceable furniture).

Keep an eye out on hotukdeals and similar sites, iirc they've had some deals where a perfectly reasonable corner sofa has been sold for less than £200.

Also keep an eye out for Habitat sales... surprisingly good. I just picked up a coffee table reduced from £300 to £120. And don't necessarily discount DFS etc, not the most desirable but being able to pay the sofa off interest free over 2yrs was a lot more suited to me having just bought my first place than buying one I didn't esp like off ebay for £200 or so.

Other from that, relatives usually have odd wardrobes / spare beds laying around!

Lots of local auctioneers hold sales of second hand furniture.

The only thing that really needs to be good is the bed. Nothing worse than a lumpy mattress that gives you a bad back.

I managed to get an IKEA sofa on the website preloved for 20 quid, it was like new and the owners were redecorating and they just wanted rid.

But it is worse to gonna for second hand furniture which were sold in auctions. Sometime it become fruitful in respect of price.

Some charity shops have stores selling good secondhand stuff, all for a good cause too, for example there is a British Heart Foundation furniture shop in my local town.. Worth a look anyway. Good luck anyway, we've all been there!

We have used Sofa Sofa and would thoroughly recommend them, far better quality than you would associate with the price and delivery to the door as well.

Friends, family & ebay biggrin

I've just been given a full size fridge and freezer, a great big Sony CRT as some friends got a new flat screen, and I picked up a large IKEA sofa from ebay for £26. All picked up using the van I'd already hired for moving.

The IKEA bargain corner is worth a rummage if you're going there. We got a shelving unit for half the retail price, which had some marks on the inside where they won't be seen.

Absolutely don't go out and buy new stuff from any of the big sheds, it's, what, £1k down the drain (even if it is 0% instalments for 100 yrs). Used sofas are worth feck all.

preloved, ebay, local classifieds, local auction rooms, friends+family .. just need man+van to shift

also when you meet a woman and she moves in she'll hate whatever you buy, so you might as well cheap stuff that you don't mind getting rid of!

Ebay, freecycle and your local house clearance places.

Ikea is reasonable for cheap things to get you started, but you can quite often pick up good quality stuff second hand on ebay as people replace them.

Just make sure you have a big vehicle to collect it all!

Which house did you go for in the end?
