First of all, this is the Gf's idea! Apparently we don't have enough storage in the bedroom and she likes the idea of a 'Sex In The City' style wardrobe, whatever that is.

Good idea?

I'd like something that'd be removable when we sell the house, and preferably not too expensive.

I've looked at some of the big company's magazines (IKEA/Wren) but I'm worried it'll cost a fortune.

Would a local joiner be able to do the job from start to finish?

As you can see, I'm clueless! :clown:

Does she mean a walk in wardrobe or a dressing room? Covering a couple of walls with adequate ikea cupboards shouldn't cost too much.

Watch a couple of episodes of MTV Cribs, you'll soon get a feel for what she's after... wink

IKEA will be a hell of a lot cheaper than a joiner making bespoke units

We have just done exactly this. Well this and increasing the floor space of the house by 100%. What was the box room is now a walk in wardrobe with Ikea Pax wardrobes and no doors.

I could have done nothing else to the house, whenever one of the wifes friends comes to view their reaction is always "I want a walk in wardrobe"

I did this at my old house, I put clothes rails between the walls no joinery involved. Girlfriend loved it

Did this in my new place, well, a dressing room more than a walk-in wardrobe. about 3m of cheap-ish wardrobes along one wall, hollywood mirror with lights on the feature wall, and a decent sofa bed so the room can still be used as an extra bed room if the house is really full. Missus loves it, it is her sanctuary. I have my garage, she has her dressing room.

will bookmark this we have knocked through a spare room off our bedroom for a walk in in wardrobe, a good amount of space in there, the rooms about 13 x 8ft, thanks for the link about the pax wardrobes from ikea missus likes the dark shade of brown. will save some money if we could get them rather than specific walk in wardrobe furniture.

I'm doing the same. Since we live in an old house, we are looking for some vintage/antique storage similar to this.

That's essentially what we'll do when we move to somewhere bigger. I think it's a great compromise.

I'll have a study with a sofa bed, she'll have a dressing room with a sofa bed, and both will have locks on the doors so the kids can't get in either.

We have done this to the 3rd bedroom here, just me and gf living here and we like space and like everything to be hidden away. Bought a big 'pax' iirc from ikea for sensible money, ok its not the quality of bespoke joinery but we have the same view as yourself that one day we will move and things like proper built in wardrobes in rooms that someone may want for their kids will put the thickies off as obviously nothing can be taken out can it biglaugh

yes Don't see the point in 'dedicated' spare rooms which remain empty 99% of the time. Too easy for them to become junk rooms. Would much rather put them to good use as a study/dressing room/gym etc.

We've done something similar with the bedroom which was an office until it got moved outside to a cabin.

We've just put some decent clothes racks from Ikea which also hold shoes and there's a chest of drawers in there.

I'm not sure I'd bother with getting a joiner in to build anything as it'll be expensive.

We did the same thing a while ago, it’s a great idea, I used the elfa décor range rather than ikea

The pictures were taken prior to the OH getting hold of it!!!!!

Love the idea but the only issue I can see is dust getting on dark suits and jackets. Do you find this happens?

Yes, you do get it on items which aren't used regularly, cheep dry cleaning bags work well with suits.

Thanks all. Decided to buy off the shelf wardrobes but go along with the plan.

I built up a full sized Pax unit from Ikea on Saturday, but put doors on it, as it's for the spare room. I'd use them a again in the future. Easy enough to put up, good flexibility, and lots of options to go in like drawers and stuff.

They could get expensive if you put in loads of options, lights and glass shelves, but if you're sensible, they are a pretty reasonable price, for reasonable quality stuff.
