I know nothing about furnishing a living room and dining room and unfortunately I don't trust my wife as her taste is appalling IMHO.

Can anyone suggest anywhere like websites (forums?) or books where can see how people have decorated their front rooms (and more importantly) where they sourced the items from

It's also got to be real world stuff, not those people in converted barns who spent £100,000 on their indoor cinemas and pools. I haven't got that sort of budget!

Thanks for any inspiration you guys can give.

What type of property do you have and how old is it? What are you looking for - modern, traditional or contemporary?

Knowing this makes it a lot easier to find options for you.

NEXT are now doing furniture and home stuff and their stores have many quite decent room sets. They have a design service as well. I think it actually works quite well; the only downside is that you'll end up with a house that looks like it came from a NEXT catalogue.

There are a lot of ideas here: www.housetohome.co.uk

There are a few "open chequebook" rooms but also plenty of more modest ones

'Your home' magazine and another one I think its 'house beautiful' £1.99 each month (don't buy the really expensive magazines 'cos they have the really expensive designs in)- have latest styles / makeovers done in 'normal' people's houses.

It's a 4 bed detached from the 70s. I'm looking at something comfortable in a contemporary line rather than ultra-modern.

Something along these lines would be my starting point.

I don't have a clue where to go for wallpaper, paints, sofas etc. though

Any ideas would be welcome

Ikea or Dwell for cheap stuff. Quality not great and Dwell in particular seemed very poor.

BoConcept. Can't comment on quality, but may have the look you are after.

Ligne Roset. Can be expensive but good quality.

B&B italia, Roche Bobois etc. Expensive but good quality.

ETA this maybe useful http://www.ligne-roset.co.uk/Room-Planner/Default....

www.realhomesmagazine.co.uk probably worth a look, has a decent supplier directory.

You could always look into getting the house doctor round.
