Any recommendations? The only makes I know of are Husqvarna, John Deere and Mountfield. Which of those are any good / any others? Need to mow about 1.5 acres and ideally attach a trailer the previous owner of the house left me, which would be handy for collecting firewood. 4WD seems a good idea but John Deere 4wd are about 12 grand! 5k would be ok, 12k is not ok.

cheers!

Stiga. Accept no substitute!

In the middle of summer when I'm cutting the grass once a week i can do 3 acres in 2 hours. Mine was 2nd hand, 18hp, 2wd no power-steering and cost about £3k IIRC.

You should also consider second-hand, you can get a lot for your money.

Go for a big cutter deck to save time, provided the width does not restrict access to parts of the garden. 48-inch plus cutting width would be ideal.

I recently took delivery of a used John Deere 455 with a 54-inch cutting deck. Cost me 6 grand, I think they were over 20k new. Absolutely stonking bit of kit.

Also, instead of paying for 4x4, which may be rarely needed, some have a differential lock that can be engaged manually.

We have a Lawnflight

like this one, two wheel drive, simple to maintain and very reliable,
Has done approx 1/2 acre once a week for the last 6 years and no faults.
And has a tow bar attachment for your trailer, depends on the weight you are pulling realy, you may need something more heavey duty.

Yes, I inherited one when we bought our place. Sure it would be OK for light duties in a small garden (and if you are cutting it twice a week) but the tube blocked very easily, it was seriously lacking in power and it kept snapping belts.

Sold it on ebay for £400 (way over the odds I thought!)

biggrin I really do!! It would make light work of trimming the hedges although I suspect the turning circle may be an issue for the flower beds...

To me fair, I had an MTD Lawnflite back in 1984. Ran for 10 years absolutely faultlessly before the gardener tore the front wheel off catching it on a fence post.

You just can't get the staff these days. I hope you had your man beat him.

Yeah, the head groundsman tore a strip off him. Tsk.

Frankly, you contributed to his downfall by allowing him to use a motorized device. My gardners use scissors.

Standards.
