To free up space in our second bedroom, we've thought about getting some doors fitted to the alcoves on either side of the chimney breast (hehe).

We've measured up and have got some big differences in widths, the walls are not straight down, so that explains that. But how do we ensure the alcove is square, and not leaning?

I will post up measurements, awaiting an email with them on.

The house I am renovating at the moment hasn't a straight line in it which was fun trying to fit skirting to!

Anyway, my house has the cupboards already in place for alcoves and they have achieved it keeping the doors square and using the wooden frame/ architrave to create a flat edge so get a piece of wood, fix to it the wall plumb and then either cut the wood to fit or use wood filler to plug the gaps then paint.

I'm after making the doors flush with the wall. The best way I can describe it is to make it look like a kitchen cupboard. So the frame will be behind the door and the door goes to the edge of the frame and butts to the wall.

make the aperture plumb with a frame, you can then hang the doors true from that

it'll be a fiddly, arsey job, as like the poster above, my house is a jerry built house (it was built by german POWs hehe ) and there wasn't a straight or plumb line anywhere

I've come up with an idea. I'm going to make a temporary frame out of 1-inch wood, that'll allow me to get the biggest the frame and doors can be. I'll ensure its straight and that'll allow me to see the gaps and also the max measurements.

I can't think of an other way to guarantee what will fit.
