What do you do?
Flat is a 2 bed place at £800 a month. Bills are £250 a month.

My proposal is as follows:

Bedroom1 = 33.33% of the house
Bedroom2 = 33.33% of the house
Common areas = 33.33% of the house

Therefore rent should be split as follows:

Me = 44.50%
My flatmate = 27.75%
His GF = 27.75%

Bills should be split at 33.33% each.

Does this sound fair to everyone else?

Will she be paying you both in cash or in kind?

Sounds fair but I think you're mad if you let this happen. You'll always be the gooseberry, be it in the lounge or kitchen etc.

Sounds fair to me, they'll use twice the amenities as you, so a 3 way split is right. Also, I'd get the pin-hole cameras in place before she moves in.....biggrin

If I was you, I'd go for them paying 2/3's of everything, then offer this as a compromise if needed...

How many bathrooms do you have? If there is a room with an ensuite and one bathroom, life will be infinitely easier.

Make sure she buys her own loo - roll no matter what.

Bills is a no brainer, split in 3rds. She'll shower, drink and be warm as much as the rest.

I'd up the rent though, as you're going to have to put up with the arguing and the fact a girl will be living in the flat, and it'll all of a sudden become covered in candles and st.

And why are you only changing an additional 5.5% for an additional person living in the house?

Depends on how happy you are having them shagging like bunny rabbits when you're sat there trying to watch Top Gear.

This is my worry.
Technically she stealth moved in about 2 months ago. It's a long story. I quite like how it is at the moment, though. She pays only a 3rd of the bills and she pretty much has no say in how I do things in the house.

If she starts paying then she might start asking me to do st like hovering and washing my dishes the second I'm done with them..

I was going purely on fair, not taking into account my own qualms of having another person living in the house.
Frankly, a girl in the house changes the dynamic a fair bit. Farting and laughing is out, for example. She literally runs out the room if you fart.

Maybe I should offer 33.33% split of everything first and see what they say.

Unlike men, women like baths, use hairdryers/hair straightners, use endless amounts of towels, have the washing machine on constantly plus will bitterly complain about the heating less than 24c even in high summer.

Factor this crude generalisation into your bill calculations. wink

Very true. Only ever live in the same house as a woman when it's your own OH and, therefore, certain compensatory benefits are a factor. In any other circumstance I just can't imagine it being with the hassle.

Remember all women are completely mad, have you provided yourself with adequate compensation to cover all of the things that are about to happen?

I could acquire a drinking problem? Might make things easier :P
To be honest though, I'm quite good friends with his GF. She's seemingly nice enough, but can be a bit strange sometimes.

I'm honestly surprised that my flatmate wants her to move in, but he said it. I might talk to him tonight and ask him honestly if he wants her to move in and that if he doesn't I'm willing to be the bad guy and claim I don't want her moving in.

This.

I've had friends in this situation in the past and withing 6 months either the couple have moved out in to their own place or the gooseberry has. Decisions are no longer 50-50 because there's two of them and one of you. Particularly tricky if there is only one lounge / tv area and bathroom in the place. Also meal times / use of kitchen etc. The woman starts nesting and the single person gradually feels like they are an outsider and "awkward".
Agreed.

You need to get out, and soon. You're being used by the couple for their first experiment at living together.

Find yourself a new flat, or a new flatmate.
