Any roofers out there for help, please
Discussion
Hi all.
Just a quick request for a roofer to let me know if a quote I've just had is ok, please.
it's to pull up and re-set ridge tiles (roof is on 1995 built, modern detatched house - approx 40 feet long) and re-point a chimney - extends about 4' higher than roof, sweep down roof for moss, re-do 4 valleys - on points of roof, and re-seat half a dozen ridge tiles and sweep down a detatched double garage 'pyramid shaped' roof. The roofer reckons 1 & 1/2 days with 2 roofers and 1 labourer. Total labour and sand/mortar is £875 - ie approx £250/day for each roofer, £50/day labourer and £100 to get on the roof in the 1st place. All done from ladders - no scaffolding.
Please let me know if this is about right in Berkshire.
Bloke does come recommended.
Thanks all in advance.

A couple of years ago I would of said yes, in the current climate, not so sure.
I don't know any tradesmen earning £250 a day, and as for laborers on £100 a day, no chance.
1 Ton of building sand and 7 bags of cement is going to cost about £70.
He's charging you £100 to basically give you a price, whats that all about.
I would say you could at least get £250 maybe more off the price.
Hope this helps.

Get another couple of quotes.
IF its a quality job I dont think you'll get it much cheaper, not to the tune of £250 less.
Nothing to with the price but thats pretty dodgy doing it off ladders.
Whoever carries out the work, if you can, check how they're pointing the chimney, ie: depth etc.

It is possible to do it off ladders, but its not much fun. When you say 4 valleys on points of roof, do you mean valleys or hips? Valleys are a lot easier and quicker than hips, especially if you're working off ladders. If they're hips, not easy off ladders, although do able. If they're going to rebed all of the ridge and if they are hips, then rebed the hip tiles and redo the chimney as well, it's an alright price, if it's a decent job that is, where all of the chimney pointing is ground out and all the ridge tiles are rebedded rather than just pointed. It's not bad for them either really though as sand and cement is dirt cheap.
I'm a roofer with not much work at the moment and I'd be quite happy to have a house to repoint for that price anyway.

This would be the important part for me, much better to have the job done decently by someone who has been recommended and done other work that has proven to be good, than to try and save £100-200 by getting someone unknown. If any problems develop down the line and the roofers have gone AWOL you will be kicking yourself for weeks. Thanks everyone.
I have decided that, as many have said, a recommendation is worth more to me than a few quid saved.
I'm not prepared to get on the roof and do it myself, so I guess that it's worth the money - but I wasn't expecting it to be nearly a grand for 1 1/2 days work!!!
Cheers for all your replies.
