Motorised valves? If there is one on the cylinder primary, is it opening? There's a manual lever on most of them.

Arthur I will take a look but the valve is behind a kitchen unit , is it silver with a sliding lever ( I remember seeing one if it's ?

Yep. Slide it and push it upwards at the end of the stroke. It should then lock in position if you let it spring back a little.
Bear in mind that it may not fire the boiler so you might have to put the heating on whilst it's open...! Do you not have an immersion heater in the cylinder?

Not going to believe this but just followed the wire down the back of the cylinder and it is not connected to anything,we have only lived here 8 years smile , I am no electrician but as a temporary measure can I put a plug on it and connect it into an extension lead it is in the airing cupboard so no water can get to it?

Smiler.

The extension lead should be as short as possible, rated at 3kW (at least 2.5mm² flex cable) & DEFINITELY not coiled.

The socket feeding it should not be on the same circuit as the Kitchen, unless you do not use the other appliances at the same time (to be on the safe side).
