Glass well cover
Discussion
I have disused well in a patio area that we would like to cover. The diameter is 5ft approx, and the builder giving me a quote said that though it is not huge job to do, the glass cover would cost about £850.
Obviously it has to be strong enough to be safe, but this sounds seriously over specced.
Anyone on the forum who has any knowledge of this area?

Wow, that sounds like a great feature and £850 doesn't seem expensive. If I was you I would also put some lighting in there to reall show it off at night.
I have a capped bore hole which I'm thinking of making wider at the top, lighting and covering with glass as a feature of the house when I redevelop it.

Put a cut down sheet of builders A142 mesh over mine, stops anything baby size falling down. The glass will only get dirty/condensation/lichens on the underside-too much hassle. The lights are a good idea, fix the cable to a chain as they alwaysneed pulling up as will always require new lamps
The prices of glass - we've had to get some 15mm toughened for balustrading - seem to be mainly guesswork from what I've found.
I had two quotes half as much again as the eventual supplier. Note that's supply only, so there's no wishy-washy labour element. Shop around - a lot. Consider employing an engineering firm and a glaziers seperately - may make a big difference to ££. That'd be the way I'd do it anyway.
