Hi all,

I have recently built a wooden roof over an outdoor area and was thinking of installing a chimenea inside it. It is three granite walls with a 2m high roof over the top. I have felted the top of the roof. I was planning to use a chimney extension on the chimenea and have it going up and through the roof so as not to fill the space with smoke, but was wondering how i would protect the roof from heat? Am i likely to burn the thing down? Will this work?

You can do it just check out regulations for woodburners and use the same materials and logic!!

I've seen wood burners in workshops with wooden roofs so it's do-able

IIRC Flues require a 50mm air gap from combustible materials, that is for Gas may differ slightly for solid fuel.

I'm guessing the roof is sheet ply of some sort?

Easiest way would be to mark the position of the flue, then cut a hole with 50mm clearance around the outside skin of the flue.

You can get a variety of lead slates to seal the roof externally and a fire plate will be required to cover up the internal hole.

Flue regs are quite strict so I'd do some research first. I also have little experience of solid fuel, so my info may be of no use to you.

Many thanks for your help. The roof is made up of planks rather than sheet ply due to the underside being exposed inside the space, but i guess all the advise still applies. I will have a look at ways of sealing the roof. Trying to make an area which we will use even in the winter. Here is a picture of the thing so far, will post an update after phase 2 is completed.

ETA. The Chimenea will sit on the surface to the left (where wine is now)

Think you need the TVR section.
