We have hardwood decking which has become discoloured in the frost over the winter. It appears as if part of the previous coating - Ronseal Hardwood decking treatment - has come off leaving the decking very patchy looking. The decking has narrow grooves so can't be sanded. Any ideas firstly about stripping the existing, and / or refinishing so I don't get the same problem next year?

Thanks in advance

I had the same - bought some stuff which cleaned and contained some sort of fungicide. Washed/brushed it in and then washed off again. I think most of my original coating had disappeared due to age/weaher,etc ,so it came up quite nice afterwards, just used a stiff brush.

Then just put some new stain on with a flat broom which had some foam on the end of it so it gets in between the cracks.

Can't remember what I used - just general stuff from Wickes/B&Q but the cleaning stuff was the most important.

Not sure about cleaning/stripping, but if it was going to be a lot of hard work (for potentially limited results) you might be better just replacing the boards. Shouldn't take that long judging by the photos posted.

I used this stuff on mine straight after it was installed, and it looks great even after the harsh winter we've just had (decking covered in snow for about 2 months).

I liked the colour of the wood as it was, and this stuff didn't change it at all.

I have flogged him within an inch of his life. You think I should sack him too?

Sounds harsh.

I would be tempted to jet wash it then either leave it alone without anything on it, or oil it.

All timber will go a silver/grey colour quite quickly if left alone.

Yep, what he said.

We have an Ipe hardwood deck which was in a similar state to yours and just jet washed it down using the patio attachment to get rid of all the crud and then oiled it with the ronseal hardwood clear oil and it looks fantastic.
Our boards are flat which made the jet washing easier so if your boards are The grooved type it may be worth buying a decking cleaning solution first
