Between my tarmac drive and front lawn there is a edging made from block paving. I am planning to replace this block paving with a different colour but just wanted to know how the block paving should be fixed.

Will using standard cement be ok?

No, you need a concrete haunching. Preferebly use block paving kerbs: http://simplypaving.com/view/area/Catalog/section/...

Take a couple up and see what was there before?

They might just be sat freely on the substructure?

Usually a damp mix of sharp sand and cement is best

Laid on mortar with haunting support on the open edge.
