Mrs BC &I are on holiday in USA. We have seen a couple of prints we like (about $1000). Does anybody how much import tax/VAT will be payable?

I bought some art from Australia recently and had it sent over to me (on a canvass). Cost was A£600 and there where no further charges this end.

If you were dishonest, you would get the seller to give you a reciept for 50 dollars which you would then declare if you got tugged by the customs/duty/vat police. Being dishonest, you would also get the seller to give you a proper reciept or valuation which you could use in the event of an insurance claim etc. Maybe post it home seperately if you were scared of them finding it hidden in your suitcase etc. Of course, only a dishonest person would do all of the above, and its only what I read on the internet somewhere.

We did this from Australia, bought a couple of prints and they mailed them in plastic tubes for us. Saved the hassle of carrying awkwardly shaped objects that were too big to go in our luggage. Nothing to pay once they arrived.
