Just been quoted £135 to fix this on a Hotpoint (EW81) cooker with ceramic hob. It seems a simple fix if you know what's gone.

Anyone got any knowledge of what may be broken?

Not got any experience with electric hobs, but would have thought it would be something simple like a thermistor?

Actually, I had to take one apart once to re connect a cable to it. I'm pretty sure the wiring is very basic on them, this hob was about ten years old though.

Cheers chaps. I had it apart before - and yes the wiring is basic. Sounds like a cable come adrift then.

The hob hot light is operated by a switch contacts that are attatched to the rings. These contacts are operated by a expanding metal strip that is encased in a glass tube which crosses the diameter of the rings, you have probably seen it as a black line within the circle of red when cooking. There are 2 pairs of contacts, the first to close as the ring gets hot operates the hob hot light and the second will open if the ring gets too hot.
Long and short of it,(assuming one of the wires has not melted to earth) one of these will have failed and the ring will need replacing.
If its a Halogen ring gone then the retail price is £77+ vat, (and may be a ceramic version to replace it as Halogens are now out the window) the ceramics are cheaper.

Hmmm - sounds like the £135 incl any parts could be a better way then. Cheers.
