...what am I gonna do?

Any suggestions welcome. I've got one of those plastic compost containers.
Saw a big black thing in the top of it the other day.

Get a Jack Russell - give it a hr and the rat will be gone along with the plastic container. hehe

Leave it there! I thought rat urine and droppings were supposed to be good for speeding up composting? Obviously, if it decides to branch out it's property empire to somewhere a bit closer to your house, shoot it in the face.

That's the right spelling, I think. Apparently that disease isn't good for you.

We've stopped composting for the reason of rodents. No rats fortunately, but plenty of mice while we were composting. Seems to have sorted it, though we still get a few mice in the garage smash

Same here, up to 10 rats in our garden sometimes, nightmare. All came from the overgrown garden next door and decided to live in the composter, called the council ratman, £35 and all gone. One is quite nice to watch but anymore is very unnerving.

Once it's gone sit your bin on some 1"/25mm weldmesh.

Kitchen waste is not the only reason they are attracted,a warm heap is a cosy place for winter.

I've just started building a compost heap in the garden so now a bit worried about Rats!! haven't added any meat or cooked food though, just vegetable peelings, old fruit, teabags and cardboard so hopefully shouldn't attract them!

Sops. Used to walk downstairs in the morning to the sight of rats running out of the kitchen and into the street. That was in Ho Chi Minh City though smokin

I suspect your rat may in fact turn out to be several rats I'm afraid.

The easiest way for you to get rid of them is to use poison.

We use an impregnated grain called slaymor which is very effective and seems to go down well with the local population.

You may find Slaymor unavailable for domestic purchase, I'm not sure what type of property you have.
