hi DIY gurus,

my father in law fitted our washer. :-(

its a new one, and seems to drain ok when washing, we can hear the water running away outside.

But after a few days there is a small residual amount of water in the drum
i empty this by opening the drain thing in the bottom right corner of the front of the washer, it gushes out over the floor. its ok for a week and then we have to repeat the process.

does anyone know what would cause it?

Does your drain hose loop up above the height of the drain connector where is goes in to the the waste pipe? You maybe getting flow back from the waste pipe which takes a few days to fill the pipe and build up enough for it to enter the drum.

You could try disconnecting the input, to prove /disprove if the incoming valve is leaking. Or disconnect the waste pipe end of the output and see what occurs, just remember to tie it up so the residue doesn't run out and don't accidentally put the machine on!

Sounds like a waste related problem.

Our machine keeps water in it when the pump is blocked. (£2.30, 4 collar stiffeners, countless hair grips and a cuff link last time)

But as your machine is quite new I'd follow the advice above about looking at the waste. It could simply have a kink in it or be compressed when you slide the machine into place.

If its dirty water then as above, a drain pipe problem. if its clear water then a faulty inlet solonoid valve (as its a new machine this would be done under warranty). To prove, turn off the tap to the machine when its not in use and see if the water still collects, if so then its the drain.

ps why let it out all over the floor? why not just select and drain or spin programe and let it do its stuff?

I think the explanation is that he got his FIL to fit it. My SIL would do the same. Turning on the isolation valve for the garden tap completely defeated him - his Dad did it for him.

its funny you mention the outside tap,

when he fitted it he turned an inline tap off to it thinking it was the water stopcock and it wasnt it was inline to the outside tap. so when he disconeected it, it went everywhere.

i wouldnt say it was clean water, but its not dirty if you see what i mean.

the drain for it go's into the sink u-bend, it must have a kink in it.

i cant put it on another cycle to empty it, it would wash again and add a small amt to it again.
as its only a small amt of water each time, it probably takes ten washes to appear, i open the filter and it comes out till the next time.

its like the very last bit of water froim each wash is building up each time, then has to be emptied via the drain.

The drain hose should ideally be connected into the top of an open drain pipe - is it connected to a spigot on the U-bend? I've done this in past and it's worked OK, but the drain hose must be looped up as high as possible, otherwise water from the sink will run back down it.

I've never seen a washing machine that doesn't have a drain/spin programme.
