Pepi is 2 and neutered.

He has recently started marking in the house, not very much, but it is mainly around plug sockets frown

The only difference is that he is now going outside to play from time to time, when he is feeling brave enough hehe

Any thoughts on why, and more importantly how to stop him?

Is it only since the other two cats left the house?

Have there been any new cats in the area?

One of our does this when he'd mad or nervous - If it's raining, new cats in the area, not allowed out as we need to take him to the vet, It's odd.

Found plenty of encouragement to play out helped - Time with us in the garden etc.

Ali I'd recommend a read of these fact sheets from the Feline Advisory Bureau

http://www.fabcats.org/behaviour/spraying/index.ph...

Electrical items are commonly sprayed on. It is usually a stress reaction poss from something external (new cat) or change inside e.g workmen/ decorating/ new furniture.

Anyway have a read and hopefully it'll give you some useful tips.

None of that is occuring frown He's been very chilled recently, since the other cats moved out.

I've cleaned it all up & will keep an eye on him smile

Okay, he's getting worse!

The area has been cleaned with enzyme treatment, vinegar, soda crystals, carpet shampoo, listerine & a combination of all!

He only does it now, when I go out frown

I went out for 3 hours on Wednesday night & he'd done it, so Thursday I had the carpet cleaned professionally, we spent 4 hours on the room, most of that on hands & knees on the affected area.

He has been checked by the Vet & they think it is stress, so I have Feliway plugged in near the affected area & a spray that I use on the area too. He is on Zylkene.

Friday I went out for 2 hours in the day & it had been done again, so I spent most of yesterday afternoon/evening cleaning the area again.

Now obviously, I'm locking both out of the Lounge now when I leave the room let alone when I go out! but what else can I do? I can't rearrange the furniture due to the room size/shape & I can't block the area either frown

Bugger, not really sure what else to advise, I could try asking a colleague at work she specialises in cat behaviour.

There is a new product called Kalmaid another natural product but quicker acting than Zylkene, we are getting some good responses about it

I won't see my colleague til Tues.

Thanks Becky!

He's not stressed at all that I can tell, no other signs, he's being more affectionate than he has ever been at the moment! And he just let me put in in the bath to wash the mud off him (typical boy!) goodness only knows how he got so filthy, Bast came home just as quickly when the Thunder started, but without getting wet or dirty - he looked (smelled) like he'd run through a field full of 6" high wet cow pats! All I got was a small protest mew as I started to walk up the stairs with him as he hates being carried!

Forgot to say, it is only on the side of the (leather) sofa now & a glass fronted bookcase next to it.

Both have been cleaned (& the underneath of the sofa too) with the same solutions.

Further update - following several months of cleaning patches with vaious solutions & enzyme cleaners, the whole carpet being professionally done & me doing it with a Rug Doctor (yikes) the smell is just about gone! I've bought a rug for the longe that covers most of it so they can't get to the offending areas anymore.

Both cats have been to the Vet; because I've worked out that both are stressed. Bast after trying to catch a car in July, and Pepi after the cat sitter went on holiday in July and my old housemate looked after them for 2 weeks whilst I was at work. Both have reacted well, Pepi is much less scared of his own shadow not and far more affectionate than he has ever been & Bast is not so 'shouty', although she is not spending as much time outside as she did before the car incident.

So now both are on Zyclene and because the Vet thought it might be Cystitis in one of them, both have been on Metcalmin for the last 2 weeks. Although neither cries in the litter box.

As both have been out playing in the garden every day over the last 6 weeks, litter box usage is down, so it is hard to keep track of who is doing what.

I'm still getting wafts of new tho, which are treated as I find them, but it is odd little areas, still could be either of them and (I thought) only in the Lounge, where they are still only allowed if I'm in there & I've not seen them 'going' in there - I put litter trays in the 2 main areas and they ignored them!

However, when I changed the sheets on my bed this morning, I noticed little patches where one appears to have 'leaked' whilst asleep over the last week frown More on Pepi's side than Bast's, but still could be either of them. This fits in with the tiny bits I'm now getting in the Lounge (not on the new rug thank goodness!). We are back at the Vets tomorrow night, as I'm worried that one of them is ill frownfrown

All animals, and people, can leak whilst asleep, often with nothing desperately wrong, doesnt make the consequences any easier. I'll try and ask a few questions of the small animal department tomorrow and see if there are any ideas not yet covered.

That's true, though it is starting to sound like cases of cystitis/ bladder inf. Hopefully your vets will get a urine sample tomorrow as this may help get an answer. My colleague didn't feel there was much else she could suggest re: cleaning up etc.

After 3 lots of tests, it appears that Pepi has a nasty UTI frown

I'm a bad Mummy! All I've been worried about is getting the smell out of the carpet frownfrown

Was thinking about your 4 Legged friends today was going to pm you.

And don't be silly you're far from a bad Mummy! You took them to be tx that's what counts.
At least he can now be treated correctly. Hope he's feeling better soon.

Ps you'd still need to clean the carpets whether he had a problem or not smile

Eta this has probably developed as a result of the initial spraying and not always been a uti.

I believe so, we'll never know for certain but I think his symptoms would've worsened long before now if it had been a uti right from the start. I hope he responds to his tx and if it happens again you'll know exactly what you are dealing with.
