Hi,

This is my fathers koi pond and his koi. He's recently set up 3x CCTV cameras and 3x electric fences around it as the heron keeps eating and/or injuring the fish. so we're trying to figure out how!

You may have a seen a couple of the photos already in a previous thread, but here are some more...

Pump and filter house (3x large cyclone filters under the decking with 3x 3kW pumps to pump the water up the stacker filter. The stacker filter is a natural gravity filter with shells, & various organisms living in little platic tubes, stacked in crates in the bamboo house)

Apologies the glass is a bit dirty...

Thanks for your comments!

Also, the koi in a much smaller pond at my mums house have give birth! There's about 40 baby koi in there, about 3" long! They won't reproduce in my dads pond, too large, cold and not any plants to cling their eggs onto.

Thanks. Takes a lot of attention and money to keep it running as it should (and the fish alive!) 3x 3kW pumps run 24 hours a day in the summer, this drops to one of two in the winter. It's also taking a lot of water from the mains, so you wouldn't want to be on a water metre! It's 2 metres deep so holds a lot of water. The costs of electricity and water do need to be considered seriously when building such a big pond. You need someone there all the time as well to keep an eye on things. My dad has just had solar panels installed to try and keep the costs down a bit during the summer.

this is our pond/small lake whilst it was being dug out, it is 4ft deep x30ft x 40ft, it is left to be completly natural, resulting in cystal clear water and a huge amount of wildlife incl great crested newts, dragonflies, etc etc, it is now 7-8yrs since it was built and now looks like this-

Blimey...I think you've pretty well killed off the thread with that first post. Can't see anyone else daring to contribute!

SmokinV8...nice pond! I do love the natural ponds. Interested to find out how they stay so clear naturally. I often see small natural ponds in people's gardens covered in green algae and weeds! Yours looks wonderful. Would like to see more photos.

Reminds me of a lake an ex girlfriend's parent had. They bought a huge old gatehouse in the grounds of an enormous stately home. They had to completely renovate the house but in their grounds was a huge natural lake. Again, crystal clear, the dogs loved swimming in it, it was full of all sorts of wildlife.

That is beyond cool. I would have native fish in there (including a pike to keep numbers down biggrin ), but that is just me.

I think the OP kinda started yet killed this thread straight away with a pond of that awesomeness. Nevertheless, I'll post one. I made this for my Mum ages ago but recently extended it and replaced all the liner, pumps and filters etc (kept the filter material before anyone panics!). It has matured nicely.

Why is it a Koi pond? Because Mum brought a small one that has fitted in nicely (can you spot it?)

Some great ponds here.

I'm not posting pics of my puddle, it'd be embarrassing!

Thanks, that looks really nice.

I took a load more photos a couple of weeks ago when the sun was out. I'll try and get them posted up at some point. Looks nice in the sun with a bit more colour and vibrancy!

Very nice indeed OP. I just have a small 500ltr pond with a mixture of fish & my biggest problems were kepping the water clear & stopping the pump from freezing up in extreme cold. I overcome the water issue by using blancket answer & I moved the filter box into the shed.

I shall post some pics up later of the pond & fish, but great job with yours. thumbup
