Howdy folks - anyone got any bright ideas on how to stop our pup from chewing the walls while we're out?!

She's on her own for four hours in the morning - most of which she sleeps through, and then another three and a half in the afternoon after I've been home at lunchtime, for four days a week... it's the afternoon stint that she's active in.

We can't really increase her exercise levels at the minute - she's only six months old and gets more than the advised amount anyway. The house is rented, so nailing plexi-glass to the walls in her room isn't really an option. We thought of lining the walls with pet play-pen fencing, but don't really know how we can fix them to the wall so she can't pull it over/off...

Other than that, the only other thing we can think of is some sort of foul-tasting spray, that won't stain the walls or harm her, as she'll likely eat it anyway. -anyone recommend something?

She's got chews galore that are rotated so they aren't the same toys; I've tried frozen treats in a bone for her to lick... I think we're going to try some stag antler, which I saw on another thread... but she doesn't seem to want chew toys.

Well who would, when there's perfectly good walls that can be chewed?

Roll on another couple of months when she can be thoroughly tired out...

...in the meantime, bright ideas, anyone?!

Have you tried frozn stuff in Kongs ?

The other one we had was a rounded off cube type toy that slowly released food if rolled around - kept ours busy for ages.

We had a GSD that ate the walls so we used tabasco sauce, turns out it liked spicy food and all we were doing was adding a tasty dressing to an otherwise bland meal. They do grow out of it fortunately. Perhaps you can get some proper stuff to wipe on the walls to deter them from chewing these-days?

hehe

She has two crates already - crating her for 7 hours a day, four days a week would be a last alternative for us I think.

Turn - yes, I've tried frozen stuff in bones and kong. Going to get one of those, though!

RV - that's along the lines I was thinking.

Anyone ever used anything they can recommend?

(Cheers for the speedy responses!)

What difference does it make to her if she's enclosed in a crate or a room?

Well, the room is... you know, bigger than either of her crates...

Isn't that quite an odd question?

You say you can't pexi-glass as its rented, have you got a clause about it in your contract? When I've been in rented so long as it was made good at the end, the landlord wasn't worried, think he was actually glad of the free coat of paint! Pre-drill the plexi and fix with plugs and screw, once its done with, bit of filler and a coat of paint and its gone.

Lol my point is that on the whole, she will likely sleep through most of the time she is alone. Whether she sleeps enclosed in a room or enclosed in a crate will make little difference to her. A chew toy or whatever in with her gives her something to play with.

It's not ideal, but it's no less ideal than being enclosed in a room with no company for the same length of time.

If you have two crates can you not trade them in for one larger one? Also, if she is active in the afternoon and only chewing then, then wouldn't putting her in the crate for this period be the answer to her chewing the walls?

I'm sure I read somewhere ages ago that they do it for the iron in the plater. But most likely going to be boredom.

I hear what you are saying about leaving her in a crate, but ours loved his crate so much he went in it all the time anyway, even when we were in!

Never even had to shut the door on it.

Try White Vinegar, it STINKS to high hell when you first pray it, but it does disappear.

Its also very bitter, and not very appealing to their sensitive noses! Its also good for clearing up pee too as it neutralises their wee smell!

Murph, our eldest Lab did it as a pup. Had never had a dog do that before. Anyway, the vet said it is quite common, as it is the lime in the plaster that attracts them, and said that it might be something missing from the diet that sets them off. He quickly grew out of it so we never needed to spray walls, etc. Bitter aple spray is good if the pup takes a liking to the coffee table, etc!!

Ah, I love PH.

So helpful!

Steven - I see your point now!

Vinegar and bitter apple - we'll give them both a whirl then!

Good to know that she's not the only one who does it -and that there's actually a reason for it, rather than her being a bit... you know... touched. laugh

Just need her to grow out of it now!

Granville - it's so clear when you put it like that. wink We'll give the sprays a go first; if there's no joy there, she'll be in her crate in the afternoon. What can I say; we're bleeding hearts!

(I think there's only one crate size bigger - and it'd probably take up most of the room anyway!)

Thanks to all - I'll let you know if she's chewed the house down around our ears or whether the sprays work. biggrin

Missed this bit first time round;

-there's quite a few things she could chew if she wanted to.

But no. It's the walls that get it. rolleyes

-Cheers pacman! I can't tell you one instance when I've managed to find what I've been searching for on PH!

+1 for the large crate. Problem with them being loose in a room is they don't necessarily feel secure or settled being allowed to roam around. Once they accept the crate, they don't need to fret about every noise or whether you are coming home that moment, just accept they are in their crated den until you return. For sure it doesn't work for every dog but if you think it unfair to leave a dog for 7 hours I'd suggest you hire a dog walker to take them out halfway through the day.

Why not get a crate exactly the same size and shape of the room, only 2" smaller so that the dog can't bite through the gaps? More room for the dog, and your house stays intact. yes

An ingenious solution, FatArse. If only cages came that big.
