We've had Jess since she was 12 weeks old and in March she developed a skin complaint. We took her straight to the vet and they said it seemed like a skin infection. Two weeks of tablets and the scabs would go but instantly return the day after.
A month on she had different tablets for a different skin complaint which also cleared up her skin but, again, the day after the tablets stopped great big scabs would appear.
The third month they decided to do some test, blood tests, skin tests from two parts of her body and hair samples were taken.
She was diagnosed with demodectic mange. The treatment she has had is pretty much a bath once/twice a week in chemicals which they massage into her follicles.
Jess has learning difficulties and fits within the bottom 25% of dogs because she doesn't know her job. She needs to learn everything and be reassured so this treatment means the vets have to bath her outside, sedate her and have 4 of them present.
She has another appointment tomorrow and am hoping that they say it has cleared up.
I'm so glad we have pet insurance - the bill is around £4000 so far and am waiting on a cheque from them!! I'm going to get her an extra large pigs ear!!! (last bit was a joke)

Oh bless her little heart!

How old is she now? What breed is she?

It must be awful for her going through those chemicals baths when she is so unsure of what is going on around her. Poor little thing.

Hope she is fully recovered when she gets her next lot of test results.

Just out of interest, how does dog contract mange? Is it a contagious thing? Hormoanl Thing?

Thanks Moo, she's only 18 months, the vet says she would have been a carrier from feeding from her mother. She's a rodesian ridgeback - German shepherd cross. We took her because she was, at the time, the runt of the litter. Now she's almost 40 kilos but still has a few immature traits we need to work on.
She's an awesome dog but due to her learning difficulties I could imagine if we hadn't taken her she wouldn't be here now. Sometimes it was funny watching her bark at things - hi vis jackets, lamp posts, letter box, a snowman and bollard but not funny when she got bigger then people see her as a threat.
We have a dog psychologist visit, initially once every two weeks but now it's probably more once a month.
The difference is unreal, she's better mannered than most dogs, on the lead she is great - she rarely is off the lead though.

She sounds gorgeous bless her. Pic definitely needed! lol.

Well done on persevering with her. There arent that many people that would take on such a huge hound with issues! lol

I swear my old Dogue De Bordeaux was a bit 'special'.

£4000!!! another ridiculous amount. Ask your vet about ivomec injection, off licence use but ok in the US, also advocate drops are sometimes useful. Sorry not much time tonight.

Sounds an awful lot of money. My terriers get mange sometimes, they're forever digging about around the outbuildings and they probably pick it up from the foxes.

I use Hibiscrub diluted on it and it does the job fine.

Having never experienced it we thought it was something out of the dark ages.

Broken my own timeout rule already but couldn't ignore theabove confusion. you need to realise that Fox mange (ie sarcoptic mange) is very different to Demodetic mange.

Demododetic mange is potentially a lot harder to clear up depending on why the flare up has occcurred (often immune related)

Fox mange can be life threatening (and doesn't always clear without medical tx ie wouldn't recommend hibiscrub alone as effective enough personally) is a killer if untreated but much easier to tx and kill the mite.

Demodex dogs are born with (or passed on via Mum) Sarcoptic mange is caught from other dogs, Demodetic mange is not contagious.

Note to self - stop browsing this forum!!

£4k! Once a vet knows a pet is insured its much like a bodyshop when they know its an insurance job, ripoff merchants the lot of them driving premiums sky high.

Hope your pooch clears up ok! smile
