Does anyone have any ideas how to re-train a cat to go and do it's business in the garden?

We have two cats aged 11 & 10 and it is the 11 year old that is causing the problem.

We moved in November and kept them in the house for quite a while after the move because the 10 year old had an op so I think it was about 2 months before we let them out. They will happily go out but do tend to come back in to use the litter tray. The 11 year old has now just started going wherever he likes. He has always been a little bit naughty but it is now becoming a daily occurance. We haven't yet replaced the carpets in the house but we would like to do so - but not until this problem is sorted out!!

I have been looking online and there are various ideas about moving the litter tray outside, digging some cat litter in to the ground which should help put their scent out in the garden to help with territory marking.

Does anyone have any success stories that they can share please?!

Thanks in hope
