Me and the Dog in the .....Dog house
Discussion
Came home today after being out all morning to a sad looking dog on her bed and the mrs looking not too best pleased, my first words were, ok, whats gone on..
we live in a terrace, so no garden as such, just a path thats 2 flags wide that goes to the gate that opens up into the 'backs' as everyone calls them, now the backs are full of cats, it seems every other house in our street and behind have a cat, they all roam around as cats do thinking they own the place, there always on the walls separating each yard, teasing the very few dogs that live in the street, mine included, now my dog (5 year old boxer) seems to take this very personally and has nearly scaled our 6ft wall a few times trying to get them, a few of the older cats seem to learn which walls to walk on and avoid ours now, but none of the old wise cats told the new kitten on the block not to go near number 50 with the jumping ginger dog that gets to close to comfort...
so a cat being on our wall or gate is WAY to much for my dog to deal with, imagine her complete shock when a little tiny innocent kitten is walking around IN the yard.....
Queue a Tom and Jerry (but cat and dog, not cat a mouse) type chase, poor kitten has no where to go as it notices a big slobbering fixed eyed mess charging her way, kitten runs at my dog, jumps over her, runs in the house around the table (followed by dog) into the living room area (open plan, still followed by dog) knocking stuff over to the sound of claws desperately trying to grip on laminate flooring, cat jumps on the coach and over the back heading back in the direction of the door it came in, still followed by the dog who clears the couch in one go (shes weights 4 stone so its quite an event) cushions everywhere, sky remote batteries everywhere, mug of tea over on the floor, kitten leaps out of the door, dogs crashes into the patio door as the mrs slams it shut right in front of her to try and put the chase to a holt, after she realises they will both be heading back for the door (emergency exit for the kitten) the dog is put in her place accordingly and sent on her bed, docked tale covering her bum (wont reach between her legs) shes sat in her bed, heart beating 10 to the dozen and slightly foaming in excitement..
Now the kitten, is that tired it fails to escape up the wall it came down from, my mrs goes out to make sure the kitten is ok, apart from it also being a little tired and now showing off two very big wide eyes its ok, although my mrs' attempt to pat it and console it ended in a hiss and a swipe, the gate was opened and the kitten went on its merry way and to pass the message on the other new kittens on the block not to go near number 50!!
2 mins later i walk through the door and its all my fault, i just agree and nod, ignore the dog and fix the sky remote, my comment of "well it shouldn't be in our yard" didnt go down well..
Now dont go thinking my dog is some serial cat killer, far from it, she's really soft, next doors cat is deaf so when my dog sneaked up behind it on a walk she got a shock when it beat her up and left her with a bloody nose, my point i think is the cat shouldn't of been in our yard so couldnt really punish the dog, she was just defending her territory, id hope she would do the same if it was a masked man with a swag bag, it was a one off and hopefully wont happen again, just wish cats could read the 'beware of the dog' sign!
It is quite amazing how many dog owners stand by powerlessly shouting 'No! Stop! No! Stop! No! Stop! No! Stop! No! Stop! No! Stop!' while their allegedly trainable no-he's-lovely-really dog carries on savaging the cat/visitor/friend.
Saw my cousin's 'but-he's-only-a-puppy' s
thouse Rottweiler knock a cat straight out of the air in mid leap. Stupid bloody thing, they let it go under the dining table when they have visitors and he slobbers over everyone's groins. They don't seem to notice. But it's only a puppy of course. A four-year-old eight stone f
king puppy.

I think its more a play thing my dog will ignore cats that are just sat around but if she sees one running she is either off after it or choking herself on the lead to get it. She is herding breed though so anything that moves is the most exciting thing in the world.
Same with walking through a field of sheep with her on a lead she will walk perfectly by my side unless a sheep runs off then she wants to chase it. No idea what she would do if she caught one.

When were out she wont entertain cats or other dogs that dont want to play, once she ran at an injured bird, she was to far away to hear me or for me to do anything, but she just stopped 2 meters away, ran round the bird in a circle but because it didnt run she didnt want to know and just went on her merry way, i think its all about the chase to be honest, ive got a remote control car that she's had a few times, im ok with her looking after her yard, since she has took a notice of the cats i dont find cat poo anymore which is a bonus,
ps... no cats or dogs were hurt in the making of this thread!

You need to teach your dog not to chase cats.
All well and good, our girly is now not allowed to terrorise the neighbours cats, so much so that she now invites them round for tea and biscuits instead!
As a cat owner / general lover of animals. I don't see any issues here. If the cat is daft enough to jump into a yard with a dog in it. It's going to get chased. It's part of the risk of letting the cat out in "the wild".
And if I were a dog owner I'd want my dog to protect it's yard from uninvited intruders, by making a lot of noise and chasing them around.
To my mind this story is simply "nature" in action. With added "the mental".

Thankyou, i said the same to my mrs, if someone decides to snoop around our yard and make a noise, the dog will think its a cat, make loads of noise, burgler bill legs it, win win! And if I were a dog owner I'd want my dog to protect it's yard from uninvited intruders, by making a lot of noise and chasing them around.

We clean up after our dog, but get cat crap in the garden (that the dog eats).
The cats catch and eat the wild birds, no body seems to care about them.
Our dog chases the neighbours cats that are simply let out all day/night.
If they care that much about their cats they should take more care of them and if dog owners should teach their dogs to not chase cats then cat owners should teach them to not catch birds!
Rant over.
