What with people seeming to like cats or dogs, some have both I know. What are your reasons for having one or the other?

I am a dog person.
They have always been in the family.
They are fun to train or play with.
They get me out of the house (unfortunately in all weathers).
They can cheer you up after a crappy day just because they are so happy to see you.
They can be useful for finding things in the house and guarding the family.
They are a good way to make new friends as they are a good talking point when you are out walking them, especially if you have a rarer breed.
The feeling of achievement and being proud when you have brought one up properly or have taught it a new trick.

I don't like cats. I don't trust them and have had a few that belong to friends or family scratch or try to bite me. I can't think of any reason to have a cat over a dog.

The only reason to have a cat is because you can't have a dog because you'd have to leave it for too long. No other reason I can think of, and even then I'm not sure I'd bother.

Different animals for different tasks I think

One is more predictable, fun to play with and responds on command (usually!). Mentally, you own it and it lives in your house.

One doesn't give a fk as long as you feed it. The challenge is to figure out what it's thinking. On the plus side it's self-exercising, quieter and takes up less space. Mentally, it owns you and lets you live in its house smile

What do you like about them so much that you got more? I'm not trying to say people shouldn't own cats am just wondering why people have them, what they do with them.

That's just it, you don't 'do' anything with them other than feed them and stroke them if they feel like it. Letting them in and out is probably the main activity...

Because I love animals.

The first cat was obtained when I had my own place because she was on the street all day and nights (I used to walk the dog a lot around work) and had fur missing. So she was lifted by the RSPCA and mine a few days later. Second cat was to keep the first company and to play with as she wouldn't play with us (or even let us see her play, she would quite literally run around with a ball with a bell in it for ages upstairs but the second we appeared she would stop and walk away from the ball).... Third cat was when we went to a rescue centre open day, and they kind of insisted we have him....

Second dog, no idea, Mrs wanted a better guard dog. Third dog, rescue as he was in kennels and not happy, so the owner gave him to us.

to be honest, i was never a cat person - always grew up with dogs - and my situation back then meant i couldnt have a dog. my cats all have very different and distinct natures, they are like small furry people. i think that if you do spend a lot of time with them and continue to make the effort with them after the cute kitten phase, they do genuinly warm to you and are great pets. i do know people that have a cat, let it out in the morning, let it back in at some point in the evening and show it no affection. they are the ones who have unfriendly cats.

i'm lucky enough to live at work so my cats spend a lot of time wandering around where i am (i have taught one (harry) to do a site walk with me which draws quite a few laughs. i'd love a dog but i dont want to upset the very delicate balance that my cats have - they are far more complex than people give them credit for!!!

We aren't "cat people" at all.

Unfortunately, Guzzi didn't see it that way, neither did his mate, Black Cat, who has recently left us. Peep shoved her way in during the cold spell last year, and her and Guz' have a continual battle, as neither likes the other, and neither wants to lose the hotel to the other.

The house rabbits couldn't care less about us, as long as the greens, pears, nuts and straw keeps coming.

We both work too long hours to have a dog.

Had cats most of my life, so when I was offered a free 9 week old kitten who was being given away because he 'loved cuddles too much' how could I resist?

He's grown into this

A home is not complete without animals IMO smile

I got my cats because I love cats.

The way they look, move, behave etc etc.

I don't dislike dogs, I'm a) too lazy to own one and walk it and b)prefer large dogs, which my house is not really suited for.

If I had a big house with a massive garden I'd probably have a dog too.

Our first dog, sasha, followed a friend home when he was walking their dog. He took her in, no collar or name tag. Didn't seem in bad health or scared of attention.
They phoned the dog warden who came and took her away.
My wife phoned to see if the dog had been reunited with it's family but the kennels said no one had contacted the police, RSPCA etc.
I then went up on my day off to see if there were any updates and the guy said she had 7 more days for her family to claim her then a further 7 days to rehouse or it's curtains.
Because she's a black staffy cross (with what we now know as Doberman) the guy said not many families will take dogs like that because they look aggressive.
She was less than a year old and already had pups, she's the best mannered dog in the world.
We gave them a couple of hundred pounds towards the work they do in exchange for us taking the dog!
We've had her 6 years and she's awesome
Does she look aggressive?

we've got 1 cat and 1 dog, and i love 'em.
they tolerate each other to the point where they will lay together on the sofa with a cuddly blanket next to me only in winter.
the cat is the boss though even though she was resued when the dog was 7 yrs old and had the run of the house.
now i wouldn't be without either. i feel i get the best of both worlds havign a cat and dog. i get to play with and walk the dog, and get his undying affection. the cat is soo into fussing and cuddles she likes to snuggle in the evening, whereas the dog likes to chill out on the floor with his toys.
the cat will come when called and really likes to be in our company.

Got 2 Dogs and 1 Cat (used to have another cat, but she went missing weeping)

Had the cats first, they were the first family pets we had, parents had cats/dogs when they were younger.

Monty (tabby) and Betty (black cat) are our cats, Betty went missing. We got them becuase my mum had a cat when she was young. We've had Monty for approx 10 years and he's lovely. He doesnt hunt wild animals or bite and he's very firemdly, though he does get easily scarred. He's a rescue cat, mother cat abandoned with kittens at birth.

We have 2 dogs, one a boxer/border terrier cross about 10 years old - had about 9 years (she was also a rescue - Abandoned as a puppy on a balcony when pregnant - escaped and was saved) - Lovely pooch, loves socialising with people and going on adventures as well as 'helping' around the house. And the other dog is called Hattie - A Jack Russell/Dachsund cross, a real lap dog, demonstrates tough jack russell attitude when there are strangers, but in truth a complete wimp tongue out (also saved - living with gypsies and not fed or looked after properly).

As for the original question, I dont we chose them, they chose us!

Both are very happy, we live by woodland and commonland so the animals have a lovely time adventuring the land.
