I have a 4yr old golden lab,a b1tch she's not on heat for another 2 months, now when we visit my sister, who has a male lab approx the same age he continely licking her ears all the time, she gets quite annoyed and snaps at him showing her distaste of his attentions.
Is this love for her or is there something I'm missing ?

I think he's doing the doggy version of taking her out to dinner.... My male does this to my bh before she comes into season, and when she's in season, and tries to lick her muzzle etc as well.

Or he could just be a silly sod who licks other dogs in excitement....

Well we don't want to be keeping them apart as he whimpers when he can't see her, he prods and winds her up,
now if she was an old b1tch I could understand her reactions , yet they are the same age, she does not want to play with him.

Whining is also because he wants to mate IMHO. And no, she won't want to "play" until she is ready... At which point you might want to keep them apart unless you want puppies.......
