Is two dogs enough?

Currently we have 2 dogs, one is German shep/ridgeback which, along with her brothers and sisters were slung at the side of the road in a pillowcase. Sasha was found roaming the streets one night 5 years ago - she is staffy/doberman. Both dogs are awesome and you can't imagine anyone letting either of them go.
We have been looking at puppies, we don't want an accessory or a status symbol. We like the idea of giving a dog a better home but my wife says that two is enough. Our house is big enough for another dog (big or small), we walk them daily and try to limit the time they spend on their own by splitting our rotas and days off.
